Show A GREAT MAN GONE The death of President Arthur grand chief of the Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers will be heavy news to that fraternity He has been a wise conservative con-servative leader his course has been vindicated abundantly by the events of the time and by the tendency of all the unions to como to the platform of conservatism con-servatism and fairness to which he has all along consistently adhered There have been no strikes under his management but conciliation has prevailed pre-vailed and the members of the order of which he was head have found their advantage In the course pursued They have had no losses through failure of wages their demands have always been fairly considered and have usually been met They have faithfully observed their contracts and have been selfrespect Ing and respected body of workmen standing high In the estimation of the whole public employers and employed alike They lose their great chief bulb bul-b no means his influence and the consistent honorable traditions that he has l been so successful In instilling into the spirit of the brotherhood And no doubt they will continue In the shining path he so clearly and sturdily opened for them A man who was able to hold his order so firmly In tho paths of conservative action and rightmindedness during a time when there was so much of turbulence turbu-lence and of loss and bitterness must havc posse se1 great qualities It Is fit that the public should recognize this nnd sorrow for tho loss of a man of high character sturdy qualities and true greatness |
