Young people planning to attend Boy Scout long-tersummer camps need to have proper physical examinations before they leave for camp, according to Laird S. Swensen, M.D., chairman of the Boy Scout Committee of the Salt Lake County Medical Society. Extreme physical demands are placed on young people because of the high altitudes of campsites, increased exercise, cold water swimming and the possibility of incurring all types of allergies and illnesses, Dr. Swensen pointed out. When youngsters are ill or hurt at camp, proper diagnoses and treatment by camp physicians depend heavily on the Personal and Health Record completed during the physical exam, he explained. Scouts are encouraged to see their private physician, or call the Salt Lake County Medical Society for referral to a physician. Any young person who is unable to pay the expense of a physical exam may call the society for referral to a physician who will complete the exam without charge or for a donation of $10 to be given to the Boy Scout Medical Fund. Doctors from the society also volunteer their services each year to staff the medical facility at the East Fork of the Bear camp, he noted. Doctors and their families stay right at the campsite for a week or more. We are working with the Boy Scout Council to help provide quality medical care for scouts. Well assist in developing a new first aid station for the Scout Training Center at the Tracy Wigwam camp. noted Dr. Swensen. CONFIDENTIALLY - What some people enjoy most about ping pong is stepping on the ball. Boy Scouts owns and operates five campsites in addition to the East Fork of the Bear camp. At the five camps where permanent medical facilities and camp doctors are not available, medical care is provided by camp leaders trained in first aid or by medical services in neighboring communities. Scouts are being encouraged to contact their own doctor for the physical exams, Swensen explained. If scouts do not have a regular doctor they may call the Salt Lake 7 County Medical Society at for names of doctors who participate in the Boy Scout project. 355-747- Free Lunch Continued from first page, hear that there was something suspect about aspartame because they were suspicious from the start. letters began Heart-wrenchin- g coming to USU telling of mysterious personality changes and debilitating migraine headaches they were sure had been caused by NutraSweet. These people were glad that someone had finally confirmed their suspicions. The sad truth is that nothing has been confirmed one way or the other. It is unlikely that NutraSweet will disappear from supermarket shelves or carry warning labels in the near future. It is also unlikely that the scientific community will stop investigating possible side effects of the sweetener. The bottom line? Eating carries with it risks. Not as much risk as not eating, however. While many of us applauded and contributed to Live Aid and We Are the World food g efforts, just as many of us are worried about the effects of too much food on our own plates. Our preoccupation with eating without gaining weight will continue to make us vulnerable to advertising gimics and scientific horror stories sweeteners. about fund-raisin- PRESENTING THE ALL NEW "GOLDEN GATE" THE CAL SPA SENSATION Big 350 Gallon-- 7' Octa-Roun- d Tha ilogant Spa Soots 7 Pooplo Completely Self Contained With Redwood Skirt-Til- e Inlay -- PLUG IT 'S REG. 3494 SPECIAL TRUCK LOAD 0NLT . . .
