Show DETECTIVE BURT MAKES HIS LAST ARREST Salt Ike, Aug. 15 Joseph Will' iam Burt, a city detective and on employe em-ploye of the city, county and stale for the past. yeirf, died at his home, 615 Fourth avenue, of arterio-.-"hlerosis and argonlc heart trouble, after a lingering Illness lasting over a period of three years. At the time of his death he was serving In tlr rapacity of Jetectlve In the police department. de-partment. Since February he has b?en Incapacitated from his duties, and returned a week aco last Wednesday Wednes-day from Idaho, where he had gone tor the benefit of his health. Practically all his life was spent in pursuing the duties of peace officer. .Born lu P.rUham City In March, 1S57, he came to Salt like with his parents when but a jonth. He was a hou of the late Andrew 'Burt, who was shot by a negro as city marshal of Salt Lake In 1SS1, the negro being later lynched by a moh of Irate citizens. The deceased detective was also the brother of Andrew Burt Jr., for two years sheriff of Salt I,ake county and organiser of the police department of Manila. j When IS years of age he accepted a po?ltlon as license collector under i B. Y. Hampton, to whose daughter. Hannah B. Hampton, be was married six years later. loiter he served a water master, following which he entered en-tered the service of tho city as a policeman Two years later he was employed In taking care of the jn i ' during his brother's term of office. Leaving the service of the county, he became- an employe of the state, and reived four years as guard at the f-tuta penitentiary. In IfiOu he received re-ceived the nppointment to the position posi-tion ho held at the time of his death. He was an efficient officer, faithful in the performance of his duties, and highly respected by all with whom he came In contact. He Is survived by a widow and Feven children, four boys and three girls, tho youngest of whom is 111 vears of age, who are: Hampton Burt, Leslie Burt, Ralph Burt, Clifford Burt, 01 Me Burt, Blanche Burt and Bertha Burt. He also leaves a mother ami two brothers. Parley Burt and Llliah Bmt. All are residents of this city. Mr. Burt was a member of the Woodmen of the World. |
