Show STEEL TOWER POWER LINE I Announcement Is made from the of-I of-I fire of the Utah JJght and Railway company thati this company Intends, m the uear. future. U extend Ita distributee dis-tributee system in Davis' county for tho purpose of developing an electric lighting and power market In the rap-Idly rap-Idly growing towns and territory between be-tween Salt Ijike City and Ogden. Tho company's plans for consummating this end are very extensive and Include In-clude the erection of a steel tower I transmission line between Salt Lake j and Ogden. This additional traos-I traos-I mission lino is required in order to I transmit the Increasing amount of power which the company receives from the north, as a result of the installation in-stallation of its mammoth new plant at DeIl's Gate and the enlargement and Improvement of Its pioneer plant at Ogden. The present transmission line between be-tween Salt Lake and Ogden. which was built fourteen years ago, has j been completely outgrown by the com-' com-' pany's rapidly Increasing business. At the time It was constructed this trans-i trans-i ndsslon line was considered to be the best of its kind in this territory. Some : Idea may be gained of the rapid proz-' proz-' ross of the electrical Industry by the j fact that the type of construction used on this line Is as far behind the pres-' pres-' ent construction as the horso car Is behind tho trolley. Material for the new transmission line has all been ordered and much of it Is now ready for shipment. This line, like its predecessor, will represent repre-sent the most advanced state of the business, and, while It Is Impossible lo anticipate what other Improvements Improve-ments will be made, It will undoubtedly undoubt-edly go Into tho scrap heap with the iest In a few years. Towers 60 feet High. Steel towers will be used to carry the heavy copper wires which will be required to transmit the necessary amount of power. As. much engineering engineer-ing skill enters into tho designing of these towers as in a modern office building. They will be sixty feet high and spaced COO feet apart The average spacing of wooden poles Is 132 feet. The towers will suspend I two separate circuits, one on each side. Each circuit consists of three ! wires, each one suspended vertically I above the other. What Is known as the suspension type of Insulator will be used. Instead of supporting the wire above tbe arms by means of a wooden pin and porcelain Insulator ' the wires are suspended below the arm The insulator Is built up of units each one of which resembles an Inverted plate. Each unit will In-i In-i sulate against f approximately 23,000 ; volts, so that If it Is desired to trans nut power at 100,000 volts It Is only j necessary to suspend wires by four units connected together. A galvanized galvan-ized steel wire will be run the entire length of the line, suspended directly above each circuit, for the purpose of lightning protection. In case of lightning light-ning striking a line It is conveyed by the steel wire to the ground plates, which are installed at each tower, and thence to the ground. This feature will eliminate many interruptions in the company's service caused by light-. light-. nlng striking Us lines. In fact, one of the controlling reasons for tho decision de-cision to Install this lino Is the company's com-pany's desire to Improve Us service and to eliminate these troublesome and expensive interruptions lo Us electricity. Old Line to Be Retained, As soon as this new transmission line Is completed, the present transmission trans-mission line will, be remodeled and rebuilt re-built as a secondary distributing line, for which purpose It is admirably adapted, as It runs directly between Salt like City and Ogden through the most productive' portion of this very fertile territory, and Is only a short distance from practically all of the Industries which require electric power. pow-er. Branch feeder lines will be built east and ivest from the main line as are required, so that ultimately the company will serve tbe entire territory terri-tory between the two cities. While the present buslnfHs In this territory dons not warrant the Investment Invest-ment of so niurh money for this purpose, pur-pose, tho company's officers believe thnt a eonsiJerablA amount of profitable profita-ble electric lighting and power business busi-ness can be developed in this territory. terri-tory. It is a well known fact that there are many thousands of acres of land in Davis county situated above ;iny of tbe present canals or Irrigation Irriga-tion ditches whb.li could be made to produce the vry finest quality of fruits and vegetables If the land could be Irrigated. Electric power makes this possible by pumping with fast running and r-fflcieut pumps, from the present canals or from deep wells or other sources of water supply. Already many applications have been made for power for pumping purposes and for other industrial purposes, pur-poses, and the Inauguration of the company's now policy with respect to Davis county has come as a result of this rapidly Increasing demand for its products. |
