Show CHANGE SPOILED THE EFFECT. Minister's Unfortunate Alteration of Biblical Phraseology. William Dean Howclls, at ono of his Sunday afternoon receptions, was talking about tho slight change of phraso that may suffice to make an Impressive thing ridiculous. "I remember a sermon that I heard," ho said, "In my boyhood, In 'Martin's Ferrv. tlin nunlnt Ohio town. HIUIIIIID A'VIl, uiu IJUillUI. JilJ lunu. It. was a sermon about Judas, and the minister, nfter reading to us how Judas betrayed tho Master for thirty pieces of silver, added, "Thirty pieces of silver, dear friends, Is $18 in our money.' And then ho went on heatedly: heat-edly: " 'Yes, Judas betrayed the Master; ho prostituted that holy symbol, the kiss, for the small sum of $18.' "The chango of phraso was slight," Mr. Howclls concluded, "but somehow It sufficed to make everybody smile." |
