Show Islands Built by Oyster. Dr. Gravo of the United States fish commission has recently been studying study-ing tho Islands found In Nowport river and Beaufort harbor In North Carolina. Tho Islands, which are In various stages of growth, are shown to bo built up of generations upon generations of oysters, and appear to grow In very much tho same way as tho coral Islands of the Pacific. Tho original reefs grow across tho river, because tho swift current keeps the edges clean, and thus makes a favorable favor-able surfaco for tho attachment of tho young spat. In course of time, by action of wind, waves and vegetable growth on tho accumulating generations genera-tions of oysters, the reef eventually becomes established as an Island, says tho Minneapolis Junior Journal, |
