Tn : fe' s ' George Stevens' production "Giant," from the novel by Edna Ferber, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean, shown in sketches made by famed Uustrator, Jon Whitcomb, will play a long-awaite- d engagement at the Southeast Theatre, 4 days only, beginning Sunday May 26. George Stevens, the director and (with Henry Ginsberg) of "Giant," entertained millions, while reaching new heights of film artistry, with such pictures as "A Place In The Sun," which won him an Academy Award; "Shane," "Alice Adams," Gunga Din," "I Remember Mama" and "The Talk Of The Town." Since 1953, Stevens has devoted all of his time to making Giant" a picture which would match in scope and importance the Edna Ferber novel. Miss Ferber made her own con-tributions to the picture in the course of a number of trips to Hollywood prior 0 and during the filming of "Giant." In Hollywood, Miss Ferber held lengthy consulta-tions with George Stevens and Henr Ginsbrg. And she worked with Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat, the screen writers, for three months on the screnplay for the film. Th authoress' excursion to Cal-ifornia on behalf of "Giant," be it noted, marked the first time Miss Ferber had ever seen one of her books translated to the screen, and "Giant is the thirteenth film to be made from the lady's works. Some other Ferber films include "Show Boat," Saratoga Trunk," "So Big" and "Come and Get it." Before and during these prep-arations, Stevens, over an 18-mo- nth period, rounded up his cast. Actors appearing in "Giant," in addition to Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean, include Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercede McCambridge, Carroll Baker (re-cently seen in the title role of "Baby Doll") Sal Mineo, Judith Evelyn, Dennis Hopper, Paul Fix and Alexander Scourby. Filming "Giants carried Stevens & Company tolhe scenes envision- - Virginia and Texas. Stevens began his picture where Miss Ferber began her book in the lovely Virginia countryside near Charlottesville. Following two weeks of shooting here, the com-pany moved to the vast open spaces near Marfa, Texas for the better part of three months. In-tri- or scenes went before the cam-eras at Warner Bros, in Burbank, California. Most of the Texas photography on "Giant" occurred at the im-mense Worth Evans Ranch, which is described as "62 times as big as Monaco." Three-tim- e Academy Award win-ner Dimitri Tiomkin wrote the musical score for "Giant." Tiom-kin- 's music for "Giant" includes the title song, "Giant," and "There's Never Been Anyone Else But You." Paul Francii Webster wrote the lyricg for both songs. 'Twixt Us Teens by Tlbby Tucker Ding--a ling, .happiest Bound anywhere is the jingle jangle of the phone. And I, Tibby, very well that you are a - hoping and the phone call will be for you! Either way, is your house a pleasant place for friends to phone? Have you made it a family affair to have your home the "one most delightful to call?" Are there gravel voiced crea-tures, or fly-by-nig- ht dryads who answer the phone ot your house or do civilized, friendly, appealing vocied folk give the "hello?" Honestly, I, Tibby, think most every home's secretarial service could be improved, too. So with voice and manners and messages so much a part of our social life, how about putting your family in top spot in categories by setting aside next family night s '(Tele-phone Hour?" The phone company have some very clever and informative book lets to help instruct the small fry (as well as the older folk who might well need some pleasant reminding, too!) in telephone tactics. Rig up a message board; secure a pencil with magnet or string or chain so that it can't be removed from near the phone; as-sign one of he younger children to be responsible for seeing that the scratch pad is refilled and the pencil sharpened; hold a round itable discussion on how to Im-prove telephone habits at your home (including sharing the phone, .limiting time of calls and all.); and what you like and dis-like in the reception you've re-ceived elsewhere when phoning. It will pay off. The impression made at your house will be good. And every good impression adds up to greater popularity d'you know?
