Show PASSING OF A VETERAN C Sum Nichols Old Soldier and Newspaper Man Is at Rest C Sum Nichols died at noon yesterday yester-day afternoon with paresis of the brain after a threemonths confinement confine-ment to his bed nt 171 South Third i EastWith I With the departure from this life of fr Nichols Salt Tnke loses one of her oldest and best known citizens He was the originator of the Salt Lake Evening Times which newspaper he tilted during the boom from the t faU of 1889 until ISiO lie sold his exponent of Democracy that spring to the late F A DavJs and since that time has been engaged in the book business as rcpre l y ir I ctttli irL C Sum Nichois sen tat U I re of the International Publishing Publish-ing company lor four of the Western Slates On July Gth IIY Nichols returned i to his home in I this t city from a business and pleasure trip t to New York Two days later he was stricken with paralysis paraly-sis and was confined to his bed where he has remained since Besides belnff one of the veteran newspaper men of the Vest Mr Nichols Nich-ols is accredited with being the first soldier of the war of the secession to invade the Western regions After the close of the Civil war in which he served four years and engaged in about twenty prominent battles I in I which I he was wOunded five times I and was taken prisoner thrice and escaped Mr Nichols Nich-ols was called to Boise City Ida upon the occasion of the death of his uncle Nathan Pinkhnm at that lime the United Suites I Marshal I for Idaho who had been assassinated He attended to the funeral I arrangements and returned re-turned to Illinois 1 1 and embarked in the theatrical I business I For several years he was connected with some of the loading circus troupes of the country notably Forepaiifjhs Sells Brothers and IHngling i Tn 70 he started upon the t road a theatrical I I troupe t of his own and a year later opened an academy acad-emy of musk in Qulncy Ill which a few months later was consumed us fire and resulted In the coming west or the ownor Mr Nichols started a I newspaper then in Leadville Col and I for several years thereafter engaged In the same business In arious towns in Colorado until I the I fall of ISO 1 when he launched his newspaper in this city Mr Nichols record as a soldier n business man and an editor is j untainted un-tainted and remarkable and his dealh occasions the deepest regret upon the part of his wide cIrcle of friends who for years have admired his personality personal-ity He was born in Qnincy Ill March 11 1SKJ J and leaves a son Charles A I Nichols a daughter and a wife to i mourn his loss The funeral services I have not as yet been arranged but will likely occur on Thursday |
