Show THE SENATE. Republicans Have a Clear Majority of Three Over All other Parties. Washington, Nov. 12. The Senate will be Republican after March 4 next by at least a clear maiority of three, and tbis concedes all the doubtful states to the Democrats, The present party division of the Senate is: Republicans. 43; Democrats, 34; Populists, 0; Silver Republicans, 6. This was changed prior to yesterday's vote by a Republican gain of two, viz. : McComas of Maryland, who will succeed Gorman, and Simon of Oregon, who is elected to fill a vacancy. Of the present Republican total of forty-five, the terms of seven senators expire March 4th next, leaving thirty-eight thirty-eight hold over Republicans. To this add the eleven elected, making forty-six, forty-six, a majority of three. The following Democrats have been defeated for re-election and will be succeeded by Republicans: Turpie of Indiana, Gray of Delaware, Mitchell of Wisconsin, Murphy of New York, Smith of New Jersey, and White of California. Cal-ifornia. The Republicans carried five states which they previously held, making tbe eleven senators, viz: Michigan, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. There are four doubtful states. Nebraska, North Dakota, Washington and West Virginia. Of these North Dakota and West Virginia are represented by Democrats, Dem-ocrats, Washington by a Republican and Nebraska by a Populist. Giving all these to the Democrats, the Republicans Repub-licans will still have a majority of three. The Republicans, however, claim at least two of these states. |
