Show ALVAREZ CAPTURED. Dr. Eduardo Alvarez was captured by Colonel A. P. Hardy and James Andrus Jr., Joseph Earl and A. J. Barnum, the two latter of Buukerville, after an exciting chase of ICS miles at a point "ii miles below the junction of the Muddy and Virgin rivers, and was landed in jail here at 11 p. m. last Saturday Sat-urday night. He was brought before Justice Daggett at 4 p. m. on Monday, but waived examination and was held over in $500 bonds to the District Court, on a charge of obtaining goods under false pretences. There is something mysterious about the man. He is either a very clever imposter, or a victim of circumstances. Thar, he is educated and refined there is no question of doubt. He is a Spanish and French scholar, and talks English fluently, but with a strong foreign accent. ac-cent. That he is a physicaii Dr. Affleck Af-fleck has no doubt. He represented to Dr. Affleck when he first came here that he had considerable property in Cuba, but had to leave that island on account of an act of insubordination, in his military capacity, as his life was in danger. He also gave reasons, which Dr. Affleck considered satisfactory, why he dare not return to that island at present, and carried the game so far as to persuade J. R. Michels, the druggist drug-gist here, to go to Cuba and sell his property. Michels went and is expected expect-ed to return next Sunday. Alvarez has been wounded in the head behind the right ear, and it is questionable whether he is quite sane. Under any circumstances Dr. Affleck was shabbily treated in return for his hospitality and courtesy. Great credit is due the men who ran him down, for their determination and endurance. |
