' . v "'fit, k Big game hunters are running out of time to pick up a rifle deer permit. per-mit. With less than one week left before the opener, big game permit numbers are dwindling. Hunters may pick up a permit at any Utah Division of Wildlife Resources office of-fice and many local license agents. They may purchase a permit at any time during the hunt but must wait one day before heading afield. Big game permits are still available avail-able for the northern region of Utah. There's an abundance of young bucks in the northern end of Utah and biologists predict that in some areas, hunters will enjoy a 40 percent success rate. "We're going to have a better hunt this year than we did last year," said Mike Welch, big game program coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "It's become a quality hunting experience ex-perience because there arc fewer hunters afield, we have more deer than we did last year, and there are definitely more bucks this year. It's going to be a really good hunt." The most popular areas of the state sold out early this year. Many hunters thought that after the southern south-ern and southeastern region permits were gone, there were no other areas ar-eas to find deer this year. Not true. In a recent Division big game recovery re-covery report, deer herds are definitely defi-nitely rebuilding, statewide. Although some specific areas may still be low in overall deer numbers, num-bers, as a whole, the state population popula-tion is up. For those hunters trying to decide if this year is worth hunting, con sider the combination of more animals ani-mals and fewer hunters. That equals a quality hunt. "If we were to sell out of all of our deer permits, per-mits, we would still achieve the recovery re-covery goals wc have established and provide some excellent recreation recre-ation in the field," says Wes Shields, wildlife section chief for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "If people are concerned about the numbers of deer and have decided de-cided that by not buying a permit they are helping the herds return, thanks, but go hunting. We are well on our way to reaching our deer ratio ra-tio objectives." Several deer permits are available for the northern region. Junior halfback Nick Espindola fights for the extra yardage. Nick's effort epitomized Uintah's de termination to be successful. Utes ground out 186 yards on the ground including Nick's 83. fife iv.v.v.4o..:;.:.;:.::; f, , 7ov 1 C a I I I t I I UbMVI H " ' lii .... ..... t. ......... ... vffl5"tj5l 8 , .......................... al w ..............a.. . "I could see he (Pitts) was in trouble when Aaron broke through and kind of baited him to throw to my man. After I intercepted, I just ran as hard as I could. I could hear footsteps behind me the whole way," Long said. Long completed his career night with one last drive-ending hit. On fourth and one from the Ute 23 yard line, Wasatch tried a hook-and-lad-der to long's side bad idea. "I kind of smclled it coming, waited for the receiver to lateral the ball and then hit the running back," Long matter-of-factly stated. The open field tackle tack-le nailed the runner for 0 yards and ' gave the ball back to the Utes. No victory or loss is ever the result re-sult of any individual or individuals play. Friday's game was no different. differ-ent. Klun and Long's performance supplied the glitter in the team's sparkling play. The Ute offensive line again dominated dom-inated a bigger opponent Running backs Dave Lawson and Nick Espindola never relented, picking up crucial first downs on second and third efforts. The team picked up 186 yards rushing to go along with Klun's 70 passing yards. Tyler Gibbons contributed a circus over-the-shoulder catch in the endzone for the Utes final touchdown. Defensivley, Uintah again controlled con-trolled the tempo with a scrambling, hard-hitting effort. "Monte Morgan (Wasp head coach) told me after the game his team had never been so beaten up during a contest," head coach Curg Belcher said, "they thought they could control us with their size. Their entire staff was shocked by the way we dominated them." Linebackers Tyler Shiner, Brandon Collins, Sage Wheeler and Quint Horrocks 'stung' Wasp runners run-ners all night long with devastating abandonment, mainly because tackles tack-les Chet Stewart and Mike Glines needed double teaming to nullify their rush. Ends Dan Darlington and Aaron Hartman were in the Wasp backfield all night long. On one fourth down play, Wasatch sent a double team blast at Darlington. The Ute junior end stood both blockers up and laid the running back out in his tracks. All three Wasatch players just kind of sat in amazement at the Ute tank they had encountered. Linebacker Brandon Collins puts Wasatch back down after short gain. Collins was all over the field Friday night in Utes victory. Late in the game, with Uintah Uintah will take on Park City at again substituting liberally, Wasatch Park City this Thursday in their last moved downfield behind the pass- 'regular season' game (see related ing of Pitts to score their final article) with a 4 p.m. contest, points.
