We weigh and measure and determine the worth of a thing. It's such a part of our nature na-ture that some believe we can rate anything-even the value of a child. But the grades I give my sixth graders tell such a limited story. There's just not enough room on that card to tell everything they've learned. Everything I've learned. Like when I thought it would be a great writing assignment to have my kids imagine that Earth was on a collision course with a giant comet. The end was near, but scientists scien-tists had built a giant space colony that could travel 20 years to the next star and could take millions of people to start a new settlement. The lucky ones chosen for the space adventure were able to bring three people with them. If they'd been chosen, whom would they bring? Whom could they stand to be with for 20 years? As I read the first drafts aloud, I found students had chosen parents, friends, rock stars, and sports heroes. No one took a teacher. No one got the bonus points. iBuaEiciiaigMgiBiBi VERNAL AREA CHURCH DIRECTORY GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH 3816 S. 2500 E Vernal Sunday; Sunday School: 9:45 am Pastor Mike Bardon Morning Worship: 11 am Sunday Service: 6:30 pm Wednesday; Prayer MeetingBible Study, 7 pm FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Sunday: 2100 W. He wrote, "I live with my parents and my two brothers and I could never leave one of them behind to die so I would give up my place so they could all go and then I would hope the scientists were wrong about the comet but if they were right I would help them build a space laser to blast it and then I would get the next space ship and then I would catch up with my family." What a terrible run-on sentence. Every other word was misspelled. But I lost. Because there was no place on his paper to put an A in compassion. Because there was no place to tell his parents that he was gifted in humanity and talented in hope. . He taught me how foolish my assignment as-signment had been. I had trivialized something very serious. I never repeated re-peated it. He also taught me about measuring progress. He taught me that what teachers and parents strive to build into a person cannot be marked with a red pen. He taught me that we do not always have ways, or take the trouble, to measure what we may value the most.
