Show Volume XIV Issue XVIII The Ogden Valley news Page 9 July 1, 2007 Letters to the Editor (cont. from page 2) Make the World a Better Place I went into Blockbuster over the weekend to find a movie to watch. Those of you who have been in there recently have probably noticed that all the new releases are along the outer wall in alphabetical order. That’s all fine and dandy, but my problem is that all the x-rated, gay porn, and nasty movies are mixed in with regular adult and even children’s movies! I finally had enough after being forced to see at least 15 offensive DVD covers. Not only are the titles disturbing, but especially the images. I was in there with my husband, but if the kids had been in there with me I really would have been furious. There were very offensive movies at the eyelevel of children. And the funny thing is, the Blockbuster that I went to had pictures of families and children everywhere—I certainly wouldn’t call it a family-friendly place. So, if any of you are interested, I went to Blockbuster. com and wrote them an email telling them that I was offended, and that I think they should have a completely separate room for those types of movies. The link is <http://www. blockbuster.com/help/contactUs> You can go there and make this suggestion and, hopefully, if enough people complain something will be done about it. Otherwise, I guess we can all go to a different movie rental place. Even if you don’t usually go to Blockbuster, do this anyway and let’s make this world a little better place! Melissa Campbell, Alpine GARAGE SALE cont. from page 1 Elisabeth. She decided to have a garage sale and donate the proceeds to Make-A-Wish Foundation. The first year the garage sale was just for kids and Elizabeth made $226 for Make-A-Wish Foundation. The garage sale grew each year thereafter, and Elizabeth and her younger sister Katie, rose to the challenge. A few years later, other neighbors, Dave and Julie Broderick, lost an infant son, Jacob, to birth defect trisomy-18. McKay Dee Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit provided the Brodericks with some special memorabilia of Jacob to help them deal with their loss. In memory of Jacob, Elizabeth and Katie added the Labor and Delivery departments of McKay-Dee and Ogden Regional as two more beneficiaries of the garage sale. Proceeds help the hospital to provide memory items, rings, stuffed animals, disposable cameras, and infant burial gowns to families who have an infant pass away. A few more years passed, and McKenna Burton, infant daughter of Zach and Angie Burton, was added to the memory list. McKenna passed away a few hours after her birth, and the family was able to receive the same compassionate treatment from the hospital that the Brodericks did. The Garage Sale has become an integral part of the lives of people in the Huntsville and Monastery area, and, in fact, the whole Ogden Valley. This year, organizer Elizabeth Stitt is on an LDS church mission to Brazil, and Katie Stitt is preparing for college, so many friends and neighbors have stepped in to keep the tradition going. Last year’s charitable contributions were over $4,600 and the organizers were able to sponsor the wish of a six-year-old cancer victim, and make donations to the hospitals. This year, the money will again sponsor a wish child. Over the past eight years, over $17,000 has been made and donated to these charities. The garage sale is made possible by donations of items. If you would like to support this great cause with your own donation, please contact Katie Stitt at 389-6909, Colleen Burton at 644-1002, Laurel Kirkham at 745-1483 or 710-2324, or Ruth Silver at 668-6969. Donations can be dropped off at any time, from now until the day of the garage sale, at 9520 E. 400 S. in Huntsville. If you cannot drop off your items, call one of the organizers and they will come and pick up the items from your home. The garage sale will be held Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13 at 9520 East 400 South in Huntsville, home of Mike and Cindy Hillstrom. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to about 8:00 p.m. on Friday, and until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Last year, over 80 families donated items. This year’s fundraiser is expected to be just as big with items already being donated such as furniture, sports equipment, clothing in great condition, shoes and boots, craft items, fabric, dishes, appliances, seasonal decorations, toys, games, and books. And don’t forget to come and buy something too! Mark July 12 and 13 on the calendar. Just follow the signs to a great sale, and, at the same time, contribute to a worthy cause.
