Letters to the Editor From a Mother and Daughter’s Point of View We missed the opportunity in February to recognize Ms. Kathy Anderson, a first grade teacher at Valley Elementary in Huntsville, but still wanted to take the opportunity to recognize her as an outstanding teacher. From a mother’s point of view, a teacher is truly amazing with her ability to “each and every morning” be ready and waiting for her students with a smile ready to take on the day. For her ability to teach a child academics and her ability to earn her students’ respect due to her actions. She is also in a mother’s mind many times throughout the day due to her immense responsibility for each one of her students. It is priceless when a child enjoys school with a significant contribution due to the teacher! From a first grader’s point of view: “She is very nice.” “She is very patient.” “She is honest.” “She likes being with kids.” Thank you Ms. Anderson for being an outstanding teacher! Pat & Tristen Kelson, Eden Donations Sought For Medical Team from McKay Dee Hospital The African Medical Team from Ogden/ Salt Lake is preparing to serve another medical mission to Utah’s sister city, Ouelessebougou, Mali in Western Africa. We will be performing gynecological surgeries and assisting in the operation of a clinic to treat women’s and children’s needs in the West Sahara Desert. This mission will represent the 11th time a medical team from Utah has traveled to this remote location to provide services. Each mission has been extremely well received by the inhabitants of the area, and we know we are having a significant impact on the healthcare of this community. We will travel to three surrounding villages to teach the village members about various health concerns. We check every child and treat those with burns, bites, minor broken bones, malaria, malnutrition, hernias, and other health problems. We purchase rice and beans, health kits, medications, skin ointments, and whatever else we can find to assist these families. The country of Mali is the third poorest and the most under privileged nation on earth. Just imagine a family trying to survive on less than $30 per month. As we travel to the Heart of Africa, we not only donate our time and skills, but we bear all of the travel expenses as well. We take on the responsibility to provide all medical supplies. We provide the medications and care for each and every patient that we treat. The local government authority requires these women to pay $25 for a surgery; a nominal amount to us, but it is a cost that is insurmountable to most villagers whose annual income is less then $340. We often assume this expense because the patients are unable to pay. Many of our patients wait three or four days just to be seen by our doctors. It is our desire that you will join in this cause to assist the less fortunate by considering a cash donation. Our goal is a meager $10,000. However, any amount would be greatly appreciated and your donation would be used for the specific purpose designated by you. We need your help now, as all medical supplies must be purchased, assembled, and packed as soon as possible. We are scheduled to leave November 29, 2007. We travel under the auspices of the Utah-Ouelessebougou Alliance. Bikers and joggers today brave the risks when using Ogden Canyon for something which it was not intended for today—driving. Sixty years ago, we teenagers were doing crazy things too. My friend and I had the idea to ride our horses form Eden to Ogden. Just as we stated down the “canny,” we found a large box of frozen ice cream in the road. We knew we had to find a home for it fast, so we started knocking on doors of canyon residents. In the process, we discovered the beautiful old railroad right-of-way trail that passes by many of the homes. We rode the entire length of the canyon following this trail. We sold the ice cream and had a great day without getting shot at for trespassing and without having to dodge a single car. We did what hundreds could and should be doing today. People should stay off the car routes; instead, they should have the opportunity of traveling on a safe, natural or paved cycling trail through the canyon. What a scenic wonder to enjoy that, today, is lost to pedestrians, equestrians, and peddlers. Many may say it can’t be done because the railroad gave up its rights to the homeowners. But remember, it took a five-year fight and the state Supreme Court to get back a public trail in Wolf Creek Canyon. Many said that would also be impossible! I would encourage the many outdoor enthusiasts to pursue this trail possibility for their own safety, and the enjoyment of all. It is extremely important that you designate your contribution for the “Ogden Me4dical Team c/o Kit Smith M.D.” An African Benefit Dinner will also be held July 9 at the Ivy Lane Reception Center, 1029 25th Street in Ogden. Funds will go toward rice, beans, medications, surgical supplies, health kits, and other items that will aid in assisting the families of Ouelessebougou. There will be a closed Kent D. Fuller, auction and drawings for African door Eden prizes. Please plan to attend. Tickets can be purchased from team members by calling us at the following numbers.
