Show PAGE 35 THE ZEPHYRNOVEMBER 1990 employees that ever were or will be. Also, those who are strongly opposed to protection of these areas and the environment would like nothing better than to stop people like me, and Ive gone through enough personal harassment by them In recent years to know this to be the case. Finally, I find It a bit disturbing to see newspaper editors and government employees suggesting, even In a Joking way, that books or photographs be burned. I am reminded of the ranger at Gila Cliff Dwelling National Monument who ordered me to stop taking a photograph of the ruins (none of the shots I took have ever been published) because "We need to control where photos of these ruins appear. I am sorry people may be using my published work to guide them to fragile sites. I have never Intended my photos to be guide books to anyone. I have tried on many occasions to use captions that are vague or misleading, but perhaps some new tactics may be In order If the problem Is as great as Mr. Vance says It Is. I would propose a dialogue between the BLM and photographers to find some way to slow down or halt this trend. I believe most photographers would work In a cooperative way with the government to save the ruins we all love so much. Sincerely, Tom Till, Moab, UT Stiles: Your October Zephyr Is wonderful! Thank you for real candidate coverage boy Is It revealing (and frightening!). You convinced me that I cant be too busy to help with this election. Also, I had my Zephyr for 3 days before I could sit down and read It In that time at least 9 people asked If I'd read It yet, l.e., this paper Is being read and talked about, fear notl We appreciate your work! ..... We need It, keep It up! use of our resources. I believe every one of us, both as Grand County citizens and as "earth citizens, need to claim responsibility for ourselves and our garbage! If anyone has questions about the recycling program, please contact the Canyonlands Recycling Task Force Coordinator at 259-7680. Respectfully, Angela M. Bautista Public Education Team Canyonlands Recycling Task Force Sirs: and I Just completed a 3,600 miles motorhome trip through five southwestern states and the length of California In our 27 Class C FordEstabllshment. As on most trips, we had some unexpected mechanical difficulties to contend with along with the expected water In the gas, a trip to the emergency hospital, diarrhea, etc. It seems that In almost every Issue someone has been ripped off by unscrupulous persons they contacted while on a trip. We, on the other hand, were fortunate to have found two organizations to whom we say Thank you and "Well done. They are deserving of consideration by fellow travelers. In Moab, Utah, the dash ac decided 102 degrees was Just too much and gave up. We spotted die A & B Automotive Repair on the north end of town, stayed overnight, and pulled Into the shop the next morning. These gentlemen ran a complete test of the ac system, recharged It, tightened all the belts, road tested and had us on our way In an hour. Not only were they good mechanics, they gave us a 20 discount which Is their custom to travelers through the area. Thanks, Bill. My wife Lawrence W. Hedden, Redding, CA Note: This letter first Thanks again, appeared In Motorhome Magazine. - Ed. Audrey Graham Moab, Utah Dear Editor: In Interview, I reference to Manuel Torres response to the recycling program In last months would like to point out a few facts about the potential recycling program. First of all, Bob Hawks Is not currently set up to begin a recycling program. Based on the Information the Canyonlands Recycling Task Force gathered, It Is estimated that a capital Investment of $35,000 will be needed to begin the program. This figure includes the construction of a building at $25,000. If the task force can find a feasible building locally, then a capital Investment of only $10,000 will be needed. It Is of utmost Importance to realize that there Is much more Involved In beginning this program than ust purchasing a glass crusher. Also, keep In mind that the primary reason private business has not ventured Into recycling multiple materials Is because currently It Is not profitable to do so. The markets It will be an option for recyclable goods are sparse, but once the program Is for private business to operate the entire program within three years. However, with the Middle East crisis at hand, we may see markets expanding when manufacturers pay heed to the fact that less energy Is consumed when recycled materials are used Instead of virgin materials. For example: In the manufacturing of glass, there Is a energy reduction when recycleables are used and an 80 mining wastes reduction. Federal mandates could enforce closure of our dump. By recycling, we can save In the long run by better utilizing our landfill space. Instead of dumping glass, aluminum, cardboard and paper, why not make these materials available for reuse? Globally, a conscious effort Is being made to better utilize our earthly resources.
