Show 0 BOUNDARY MINES attracting ATTENTION phoenix mines phoenix B C it is confidently believed by many that no undeveloped part of the boundary mining district is today attracting the attention of the world at large equal to that of franklin camp located some 40 or 50 miles north of grand forks at the headwaters of the north fork of the Kettle river a section that has up to the present been entirely without railway communication of any kind and to which a wagon road is only just being completed by the provincial government ern ment the pioneer man returned monday from a trip to this heretofore isolated camp where he noted the activity t that ha t is now beginning to be felt there due to the almost universal impression that the min eral discoveries made there will prove P to be of first importance with ade adequate quite development j franklin camp according to the map naj compiled by prof R W brock of the geoit ge logical survey of the dominion who spent spen some time in that district has a mi mineral 11 erali zed area about thirteen miles in length by miles in width making what is believed belaev ta str ae t tg 8 d distri 1 be one of the largest mineralized in british columbia the area above re berred to has been proved but it is not known how much greater it may yet be found to be the geological formation is lime porphyry and conglomerate surrounded by granite hils and the ledges all have a northerly trend locally the district may be said to be divided into several smaller camps such as mckinley gloucester banner and mineral hill with others springing into prominence as development proceeds generally speaking the ore of franklin camp is a sulphide copper carrying rath r higher values than most of the mines of other parts of the boundary in addition they carry some gold and silver values and in some parts of the camp galena and zina have been found in considerable quantities but it is the great ledges of copper ore self fluxing flexing like that of phoenix and deadwood camps that are relied upon to give the camp large tonnage when the railway is constructed and development is sufficiently advanced the leading mine of franklin camp is the mckinley both by reason of the amount of development so far done and because of the immense showing of copper ore made in the property this is the mine that F august heinze of butte made his record breaking trip to inspect last fall resulting in the heinze interests taking a bond from the mckinley mines ltd on the mckiney mckin ey hanna and dunsted claims at a price said to approximate the visit of mr heinze to franklin camp which resulted in the bonding of the mckinley group was dus dua to the untiring efforts of george A mcleod of grand forks who has many important interests in that camp and who is responsible for the first development work of any considerable moment carried on there the mckinley is located on the mountain of the same name and the development consists of about feet of tunneling which has proved an ore body some feet wide w de thus far in addition to this a large amount of stripping ground sluicing has been done on the surface proving up the continuity of the ledge this work was all done in charge of A D the superintendent who is still there |
