It is a day to pause and acknowledge with respect and admiration those men and women who have served with military October OGDEN, UTAH 12 samaras the 6-1- 91 forces in preserving our freedom. He marched home again after World War Two, after Korea and after 1 1 had served in military service during all wars, over 44 million veterans. Veterans Day, observed each year on the fourth Monday in October, is a day to reaffirm our faith in this Nation and to pay respect to the men and women who served our Nation in the past, as well as those who are in uniform today. This year, the date is Oct. 27. One out of seven Americans is a veteran of wartime military service. That figures to about 29.2 million American living But this holiday, originally veterans. There are more than 14 million now dead and over a million who had their lives cut short while in service. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 a special day to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in World War One. and women These men have served their country. They served, and many died, because they loved this land and its hertiage; they loved freedom and peace. No one wants peace more than those who have fought for Vietnam. known as Armistice Day, was not set aside to honor those who marched home; it was for those who were left behind. Armistice Day remained a day of tribute to the war dead until 1954. On June 1 of that year, Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, honoring all Americans who it. Senator Mike Mansfield summed up the feelings of most Americans and probably all veternas when he said: "Veterans Day is more than a day set aside to honor the men and women who served their country during times of war. "It is a day dedicated to world peace. Their spirit of courage, sacrifice and loyalty did not end when the shooting stopped.
