Show Page October 24, HILL TOP TIMES 6 1975 ew From V When President Wilson spoke to the Congress on April 2, and 1917, he described his address as "a destressing oppressive duty." He was asking them to declare war on Germany. He said, "It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, but the right is more precious than peace." On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the following year, in the forest of Compeigne, near Paris, a bugle sounded "Cease Fire." This call returned to the world the unaccustomed sound of peace. Over one hundred thousand Americans did not make it back from that war. On the first anniversary of the Armistice, President Wilson proclaimed a national holiday. "A time," he said, "For all Americans to be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory." Although the name and date have changed, the spirit that prompted the original observance has not. One out of seven Americans is a veteran of wartime service. Bum By Oavic Leusner USASC. The individual may be your neighbor, fellow employe or in your own family. We in Social Actions have found that too many people find it easier or personally more acceptable to "coverup" for a friend, relative or fellow employe than to truly help the problem drinker. If you really want to help a problem drinker, help him and its solution. One way to discover if there is any prejudice in our hearts is to see if there are any people whom we would be reluctant to touch. We might be surprised to discover that not all "untouchables" are an Indian caste. The Howard Hanger Trio, a jazz group from a theological seminary, tries to get close to its college audiences by dispersing among them and individually clasping both hands with various persons, gazing, without speaking, into their eyes, in direct confrontation. Jesus made a point of touching those whom he blessed and healed. But the "healing touch" can have a wider range than this. Remember your childhood thrill at the warm handclasp on one of your heroes? Or the touch of the hand of your first sweetheart? Or the helping hand of a fellowworker whogaveof his time to help you do your job? The humanitarian activity of large organizations may fail to help people because the "personal touch" is missing. The other fellow knows that if we aren't willing to reach out to him in brotherhood, we don't really care about him as a person. Have you considered others inferior because of their skin color, nationality, different language, or lack of education? Or did you reach hands to them, help them to their feet, lift them beside you? If you did, perhaps you found in touching your brother you got more in touch with yourself. and They share the conviction that "right is more precious than By Maj. W'ray D.
