Show Backward Glance Check The First Permanent White Settlement farms back in 1949 wai 48.3. This average age has increased to 51.4 in 1989. So it looks as though the age of farm operator is becoming greater on the average. Too many young people are being exported out of the valley rather than staying to work the farm. This part of Cache Valley was once thought to be part of Utah. Then in 1872 the Department of Interior certified the boundary survey of the Utah-Idah- o line. Franklin county residents suddenly found themselves in the Territory of Idaho which was established by the U. S. Government on March 4, 1863. By MICHAEL D. KUNZ Clerk of the District Court Franklin county is quite proud of being Idaho's first permanent white settlement. Thirteen Mormon pioneer families arrived by covered wagon and settled in Franklin cm April 14, 1860. More settlers followed and other communities developed throughout the area as follows: Oxford 1864, Clifton 1865, Weston 1865, Preston 1866, Dayton 1867, Whitney 1869, Fail-vie1969, Mink Creek 1872, Mapleton 1874, Nashville 1875, Treasure ton 1875, Riverdale 1875, Dunnville 1876 (abandoned 1878, later Banida was settled cm the location), Battle Creek 1877, Glendale 1884, Winder 1890, and Banida 1906. Although Preston first became settled in 1866, it was not organized as a group until 1877 when the bishop of Franklin appointed Elisha Lawrence to preside over the group. Then on Oct. 21, 1879, the Worm Creek ward was organized with Nahum Porter as the first bishop. This settlement received the name of Preston in 1881. Preston was incorporated as a village on July 25, 1900 and as an incorporated city in April of 1913. Population of our county has varied greatly over the last few decades. In 1940 we had a county population of 10,229. This declined over the years until we now have 7,211 living in the area. Farms back in 1940 . numbered around 1,185. This has now lowered .to 916 according.. lo the 1969 census." The average age of workers on . On Jan. 22, 1864 Oneida county was created with Soda Springs as the county seat. At that time, Oneida county took in the whole Eastern Idaho area, from Utah on the south to Montana on the north and from Wyoming to the American Falls area. In 1866 the county seat was moved to Malad. In January 1913 the county of Franklin was officially established. Two small areas of Bannock county were annexed to this county by a referendum vote of the land owners in 1946. Since that time the area of the county (670.1 square miles) has remained the same.
