The three elders are currently serving as missionaries for the Mormon faith in the upstate New York area known to the Church as the Cumorah Mission, named after the renouned Hill Cumorah near Palmyra. This will be the second year as participants in the annual pageant for all three. Because the Hill Cumorah Pageant employs more than 500 performers, 25 stages, the latest technical paraphernalia, a spemagnificent sound-systecially written music, and all the artifice of stagecraft to dramatize the rise and fall of an ancient American civilization, it has been called Americas most elaborate religious spectacle. The Pageant is presented at night to permit the use of lighting effects with colored arc lights playing on curtains of water. This year more than 100,000 visitors from over the nation and even from foreign countries are expected for the six nights of the great outdoor drama. The Hill Cumorah Pageant portrays the story of a band of Israelites who are. enabled to escape the destruction of Jeru- salem by special dispensation of the Lord and who wish to establish a civilization in the New World 600 years B.C. There are alternating periods of ' turmoil and tranquility. eye-filli- JOE LANCE NIELSON In one famous scene, the City of Zarahemla is destroyed by earthquake, lightning and fire, in punishment for the sins of its inhabitants. This illustrates the Mormon belief that the Book of Mormon is Americas witness for Christ in the Holy Land. Some 200 of the performers are young men and women acting as missionaries of the Mormon Church in New York State. In addition, 325 young women and men from the East and the West travel by charted bus to Palmyra to participate in the Pageant. All the performers pay their travel and living expenses. Admission to the Pageant is free, as is the parking. Hill Cumorah is located on State Route 21, four miles south of the Village of Palmyra, and two miles north of the Manchester Interchange, Exit 43. About four miles from Hill Cumorah is the farm where Joseph Smith spent his boyhood and where he was led by the Angel Moroni to find the golden plates of the Book of Mormon. Near the farm home is the Grove where Joseph had his first vision of the Lord and Jesus Christ. On the basis of the Book of Mormon and other revelations, Joseph, in 1830, founded the Church of Jesus GEDDES Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, which today has 3,000.000 herents around the world, ed BIRTHS In Franklin County Hospital Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Meek, Preston, boy, July 15.
