E Burbidge answered on October 14 the Democratic candidate candidate candi date Sheriff Corless NOT YET A reasonable time having elapsed lapsed without Mr l Corless deigning to reply I deem it but fair to the voters of ot this county to call their attention to the fact and also to the conditions maintained throughout the county so that they may have ample time to decide de de- de cide cido as to whether they care to hire Mr to play sheriff for two more years or to contract with Mr Burbidge who has so frankly answered an an- the questions propounded to him and has pledged himself over his signature to faithfully live up to the requirements of his oath of office Regarding conditions referred to we find the state liquor law is being openly openly openly open open- ly violated in hundreds of places in inthis inthis inthis this city such as rooming houses restaurants cafes roadhouses so called clubs and many other places much to the disgust of the tile decent citizens citizens citi cUi- zens ens and most certainly to the detriment detri detri- ment meat of the saloon keepers who are I paying 1500 1600 per year for the privilege privilege I lege of or selling liquor Gambling is isI 1 j being openly conducted in dozens of I I I places and commercialized vice flourishes flourishes flourishes flour flour- as did before At Bingham similar conditions exist exist exist ex ex- ex- ex only more so There it is said gambling is being as openly conducted In the tile saloons as before the enactment enactment enact enact- ment of the felony gambling law In 1911 Throughout the county districts such as Garfield Magna and Pleasant Pleasant Pleasant Pleas Pleas- I ant Green it is said liquors are sold from peddlers' peddlers wagons as openly as asare asare asare are potatoes and apples and with no nomore nomore nomore more fear of ot molestation from the sh sheriff rift If the sheriff of this county would enforce the tile state laws the city officials officials of of- of Salt Lal Lake e City and Bingham Bingham Bingham Bing- Bing ham could not pull off their open town policy as they are now DOW doing and bootlegging and blind pigging in inthe inthe inthe the county would not be so popular and certainly not so remunerative to those engaged in the business and times would pick up with the legal profession Saloon men would not have to try to sneak a little to comI compete com corn I pete with with cutthroat competition as they now have to do and conditions would be noticeably improved What would be the result under a a. prohibition law i if Mr 11 Corless were sheriff Licensed dealers of course would be legislated out of business 1 but not so with the illicit dealers With conditions as above enumerated after two years of his service could we expect expect expect ex ex- ex- ex an improvement and believe that he lIe would interfere with these illicit dealers for whom he has shown the utmost respect Can you expect him to to change his policy of perfect neutrality neutrality neu neu- regarding incorporated cities and towns merely because of the enactment enactment en en- of a new llew law Respectfully HUGH L.
