Show Thursday, November 15, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 11 Mapleton Elementary students honor veterans during assembly Mapleton Elementary School students were given giv-en a special opportunity to show respect to those who have served our country both past and present. All were honored to stand for the posting and retiring of the colors by a present day Serviceman Kyle Grotegut, Son of Jan Grotegut who works at Mapleton and a student Jay Freeborn who helped with the ceremony, wearing wear-ing his Grandfather, Robert Rob-ert Freeborn's jacket. Students stood with respect re-spect and then joined in by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem. Students then enjoyed a special Power Point Pre sentation created by Ryan Kay, Kindergarten teacher. teach-er. This included and explanation ex-planation of what a Veteran Veter-an was and then honored all Veterans including the following relatives of our faculty and students at Mapleton. They were Julie Warren's War-ren's grandfather, Wilf ord Jensen, WWI; Ashely Rodger's Rod-ger's grandfather, Everett Lyle, WWII; Chris Jones's grandfather, Duane Hansen, Han-sen, Europe WWII; Jay Freeborn's grandfather, Robert Freeborn, WWII; Ryan Kay's grandfather, Ray Brown, WWII; and Ginnie Snyder's father, Herman Zobrist, Pearl Harbor. - : - ---- " .' v-f . : ' - I : Jan Grotegut's, son, Kyle Grotegut, presented and retired the colors. Operation Opera-tion Iraqui Freedom, and his grandfather, Orlando Igarta, Germany; and his uncle, Benito Igarta, Vietnam. Viet-nam. Molley Murdock's brother-in-law is currently serving in Iraq. The program was well received and gave the students stu-dents a better knowledge of why we honor our Veterans Vet-erans on this day. ' Ci7 ; - Kal Ruiz, a student at Regan Academy, helped Governor Huntsman sign the Utah Quarter Day Proclamation. Reagan Academy 4th graders were able to attend the ceremony celebrating Utah's State Quarter Nov. 9. Three students helped Governor Huntsman sign the proclamation: Julia Gonzales, Kal and Garrett Lopshire. All the 4th graders enjoyed the fun-filled field trip to the Rio Grande Depot in Salt Lake City to witness the Utah Quarter going into circulation. They have been studying the transcontinental railroad at school and this was a wonderful opportunity for them to celebrate what they were learning. The Utah State Quarter depicts the golden spike and the meeting of the east and west lines of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit Utah, in 1869. Recess at Sage Creek FimlAft'oaq 1. Recess at elementary school isn't always about kickball softball or jump-roping.
