These instruments allow for earlier detection and careful monitoring for any progression of diabetic retinopathy, as well as macular degeneration and glaucoma. We are pleased to be able to offer these technologies technolo-gies to our patients right here in Springville. This coming Saturday, Nov. 17, is National Diabetes Dia-betes Awareness Day. From 8 a.m. until noon we are offering a free screening for diabetic retinopathy retinopa-thy by appointment. This screening will be done by taking a high-resolution photograph of the retina, which does not require dilation of the pupils and is easy and painless to do. We will then review with you the results of the screening. This screening is designed for individuals individu-als with pre-diabetes or diabetes who have not had an eye examination within one year and wish to be sure their retinas are healthy. Please call 489-5111 to schedule an appointment for your free screening. AIM 24 HOURS A DAY -! X , : : - x ' V- : i K Book Look Hie Secret Debbie Balzotti I know the secret. I have noticed this best selling sell-ing motivational book by Rhonda Byrne prominently promi-nently displayed at various bookstores in the past few months. What is that darn secret for success?! No, it's not Amway, but good try. "The Secret" is a collection of how to live life philosophies philoso-phies from authors, minis ters and teachers. I found nothing really new in their advice. It reminds me of the past-popular power of positive posi-tive thinking books, you are the master of your own destiny, des-tiny, graduation speeches and Franklin Planners. There are true principles discussed that are helpful in achieving what we want in life. There are also half-true half-true principles that could be harmful and prevent us from achieving what we should in life. What can you gain from reading this book? Byrne says: "For the first time, all the pieces of The Secret come together in an incredible incred-ible revelation that will be life transforming for all who experience it... you will learn how to have, do or be . anything you want." In order of desirability she mentions: a pretty feather, feath-er, a good parking place, a nice car, a grand house, success in business, weight loss, oh - and good relationships. rela-tionships. Byrne coaches you through the necessary thinking steps and shares success stories where "The Secret" has brought amazing amaz-ing gifts into the lives of its followers. I did find it helpful to be reminded of what I believe and what I need to actively active-ly pursue to make my life what I want it to be. I agree that our thoughts can lead to decisions that will bring Us happiness, or misery. What irritated me were the constant references to The Universe and its power to grant our wishes - like a big genie coaxed out of a smoky bottle. The secret is (drum roll) the Law of Attraction. You attract what you are thinking think-ing into your life. If you are constantly thinking negative nega-tive thoughts, you will attract at-tract unpleasant things. If you concentrate on positive thoughts, you will attract pleasant things. So, think happy thoughts. I know the secret - and now so do you. Mindy Boyce performed for the chldren and adults at the November Community & Family Night at the Springville Museum of Art The next event will be Monday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the museum and is free to the public. Whirling disease discovered at Springville fish hatchery Late last week, fish pathologists pa-thologists with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Re-sources discovered DNA evidence of Myxobolus cerebralis, the parasite that causes whirling disease, dis-ease, in rainbow trout at the Springville State Fish Hatchery. Whirling disease affects trout and salmon, resulting in deformations and neurological neuro-logical damage that cause the fish to "whirl." None of the four-inch trout were stocked in Utah waters. Per DWR protocols, the population of 60,000 fish will be destroyed, de-stroyed, and the hatchery will be shut down until a new water supply is secured. se-cured. The infected fish, weighing approximately 6,000 pounds, are a small fraction of the one million pounds of fish raised annually annu-ally in state hatcheries. Surplus rainbow trout at the other hatcheries will ensure that plenty of fish are available to stock Utah waters in the coming year. The discovery was made during routine disease testing of the young rainbows. rain-bows. While disappointed, DWR officials were not completely.surprised. The Springville hatchery also experienced an outbreak in 2005 when whirling disease dis-ease was discovered in the main water supply. DWR Aquatics Section Chief, Walt Donaldson, notes that the agency is committed to stocking healthy fish, "Good science sci-ence requires that we not stock infected fish. We discovered dis-covered the problem, notified noti-fied the Fish Health Policy Board and are committed to sustaining healthy fisheries." fish-eries." The agency is taking another an-other critical step as well. It is currently digging a well to secure a clean water wa-ter source from an underground under-ground aquifer. Officials hope this measure will prevent pre-vent future occurrences of the disease at the Springville Spring-ville site when it reopens. The public can also help prevent the spread of whirling whirl-ing disease across.Utah. Officials urge anglers to take the following steps when fishing in Utah waters: wa-ters: - Remove mud from all equipment, including boats, trailers, waders, .boots, float tubes and fins before leaving a fishing area. Thoroughly dry equipment in the sun if possible before reuse. If you are traveling directly to other waters, clean your equipment with a 10 percent solution of chlorine bleach or use another an-other set of equipment. - Do not use felt-soled waders; they provide an ideal hiding place for the spores that cause whirling disease. - Do not transport live fish between bodies of water. wa-ter. - Do not dispose of fish heads, skeletons or entrails in any body of water. Fish parts should be disposed of in the garbage, by deep burying or by total burning. burn-ing. For more information about whirling disease, call Dr. Chris Wilson at the DWR Fisheries Experiment Ex-periment Station. His number num-ber is (435) 752-1066. For more information about the Springville hatchery, call either Walt Donaldson Donald-son (801-5384760) or Tim Miles (801-5384808) at the Salt Lake City office. if t If 4t This statue was dedicated in honor of Reed and Naomi Clegg in the Mapleton City Park.
