It may be truthfully said that the news from the famine stricken districts of Russia does not in the least decree tjike from the horors of the condition that now confronts thousands upon thousands cf the czar's subjec t.-, "Nobody can estimate the number of deaths :hat will result from starvation cud cold during dur-ing the coming winter. The area affected by the famine- comprises a section of the empire equalling in size nearly half the area of the United Statt-s. with a population of more than -i,OHi,out 60uls. In many districts no winter sowing whatever was done, and consequently the inhabitants in-habitants have nothing to look forward to. The hope that they will be able to exist through the coming winter lies in the fact that the government is taking most energetic measures to help the sufferers, and it is believed that under the direction of the new central famine committee, of which the czarwitch is president methods of relief will be more systematic and effectual.
