Show the man to represent - this government as its minister to Lileria, which is ex- j pected this week. There are colored ; men from nearly every state in the Union whose names arc on the tile at the state department as applicants for the place, and a very lively and inter-esiing inter-esiing tight has been made in behalf of those who claim a following of their people. Hut rumor has it that the appointment ap-pointment will be tendered to John II. Smyth, a colored man of the District of Columbia, who gained some notoriety several months ago by a speech he made in favor of a division in the social relations of the black and mulatto people peo-ple of this country, Mr. Smyth is a black man and served some years ago j as minister lo Liberia, where he imbued im-bued the teachings of Dr. Hlypkn, the noted African who advocates the su-premacy su-premacy of the black race, uuadulter-ed uuadulter-ed with Caucasian blood, over all others. On account of Mr. Smyth's position po-sition on this question, which is a far more vital one than is generally suspected sus-pected and more constantly before the minds of the colored people. f this country, he is being much opposed by the leaders cf the race, nearly ,ajl of whom have w hite blood in their veins.
