Show Banquet Honors ors orsI I Mrs 1 I Al A III BrIggs I MANILA MANILA-A testimonial banS ban dinner was held Saturday May 15 at pm at the Man Man- Manila ila Ward Chapel of the Church in honor of Mrs Agnes AgnesM AgnesM M Briggs The banquet was sponsored by the Daggett Edu cation Association to recognize Mrs Briggs for the many years ut or service to County as asa asa a teacher and educator Agnes Marshall Briggs received ed her education in Rock RockSprings RockSprings Springs Wyoming where she completed her high school reo re- requirements In only three years graduating with honors at the age of 15 A post graduate course was available in Wyo ming for future teachers and Mrs Briggs continued school for another year at Rock Springs under a Norman School Scholar Scholar- Scholarship ship and at the end of that year I she had earned 36 hours of col I lege credit and an Associate Certificate entitling her to teach in the rural schools of Wyo ming Agnes t l bf Briggs be be- be became came a teacher at the age of 16 Agnes attended the University of Wyoming that summer and started her teaching career in inthe inthe the fall She completed her first year of teaching at Bitter Creek Wyoming The following year she was employed by the District School Board to teach at what was then known as the School in Lin wood Utah She shared this pioneer school with Mrs Wiley Collett The two women taught eight grades and only a canvas curtain separated their class class- classrooms rooms Agnes was then offered a contract to teach at McKin McKin- McKinnon non Wyo and she completed her third year of teaching there During this time Agues Agnes Mar shall fell in love with and mar ried a young rancher Bill Briggs and for a time her teaching career was interrupt interrupt- interrupted ed cd Four children were born to Agnes Eutona William James and Lawona and after they were all in school Agnes again responded to the call of teach ing This was 1942 and the war raged heavily in Europe and there was a shortage of teach ers in America Agnes rode to school each day on the same bus busas busas as her children For the next six years she taught at Manila School After another short stint at McKinnon the Briggs family moved to Green River where Agnes taught at the high school Upon leaving Green Riv Riv- River er er the Superintendent filed a aletter aletter letter with the school schol board to the effect that if Mrs Briggs should seek employment In Green River at any time she should be hired and at such a salary that would recognize all of her years of experience The following year the entire family moved to Logan where three of the Briggs youngest I children were attending college along with Eutona's husband Doug Jarvie Mrs Briggs taught at the Lewiston Junior High School During her years of teaching Mrs Briggs took correspond correspond- correspondence ence courses and attended sum sum- summer mer school at every opportunity Tn In 1958 she took a years year's a cal 1 leave to attend Utah State University In June of 1959 She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree Since that time she has taught in the High School Se-hool at Manila During her long career Mrs Briggs has taught every grade and almost every subject in high school She has served as acting superintendent principal and andis andis is now the counselor All her children have taught school at atone atone one time or another and some are still teaching At the testimonial dinner held May 15 a plaque was presented to Mrs Briggs by DEA dent Jack Burton Supt Melvin MelvinL L Tucker presented a testimonial nial speech In it he quoted a aletter letter from Harry P Bluhm Specialist in Educational Test ing and Measurement of the Utah State Dept of Public In In- In Instruction to the effect Manila High School In my estimation has one of the outstanding coun coun- coun counselors of the stat state in Mrs Brigs Driggs It was apparent that she has her pulse not only on the districts district's testing program but the other facets of the guld guid- guidance ance program as well Awards presented to Agnes Briggs represented three coun- coun counties counties ties and two states Without a doubt she is one of the most outstanding teachers of the re- re region region gion |
