Mr. Ayres enjoys the distinction of having spent six days In jail in 1887 for violating the order of Judge Boud, of the United Suites circuit cir-cuit court, not to bring suit against persons who had tendered stato bond coupons in payment of taxes. ' Mr. Ayres held that the law obliged him to briug the suits, and ho made it a test question. The judge fined him $500 for contempt and ordered him to stand committed until the tine was paid. After six days Mr. -Ayres was released on a writ of habeas corpus and tbe judge's order fell Hat. "The feeling in Virginia today is in favor of the settlement of the debt on the basis agreed upon by the committees commit-tees recently appointed by the bondholders bond-holders and the state legislature," Mr. Ayres said last evening. "The debt now amounts to about $30,000,000. Urover Cleveland, Thomas F. Bayard and three other representative men now compose the arbitration committee appointed ap-pointed to adjust the differences between be-tween the two committees. I think the terms of settlement wilt not differ materially ma-terially from the Hiddlobergor plan of 1881." |
