Show Page 14 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue XIII 1 July 2000 Ogden Symphony Ballet Association Announces 50th Anniversary Celebration The Ogden Symphony Ballet Association (OSBA) is pleased to present a joint concert of the Utah Symphony and the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Saturday, July 29, 2000 at 8:00 p.m. in the Dee Events Center in Ogden. OSBA has been bringing the performing arts to Ogden for 50 years and the concert is a gala event in commemoration of the anniversary. The two premier musical ensembles in Utah are collaborating for this auspicious occasion. The Symphony and the Choir are rarely heard together and have combined only once before for a performance in Ogden. “This will be a delightful evening for all,” says Julie Cawley Hanson, Executive Director of OSBA. “Craig D. Jessop, Music Director of the Tabernacle Choir will conduct the two musical groups in an evening of light classics, pops selections and audience favorites, the music that has made the Mormon Tabernacle Choir one of the world’s most beloved choirs.” Some of the pieces on the program for the evening are works by Aaron Copland, The Polovtsian Dances, and American folk songs like This Land is Your Land, Deep River and This is My Country. The Utah Symphony celebrated their 60th anniversary year last season. They have achieved prominence as a major orchestra on the national and international stages and through their well-known recording legacy. They perform regularly in Ogden and around the Intermountain West, serving communities in Utah, Wyoming, Nevada and Idaho. In addition they travel to schools throughout the state of Utah, performing concerts for over 70,000 students each year. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has a well-chronicled history with legendary recordings, including a Grammy Award. Their 71-year traditional broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word is recognized as the world’s longest continued radio network broadcast. They have been referred to as America’s Choir (Ronald Reagan), a national treasure (George Bush) and the world’s greatest choir (Eugene Ormandy). The 325 members of the choir are volunteers and come from all walks of life. The Dee Events Center at Weber State University will be transformed for the evening into a stage. Complete with drapes, specialty lighting and sound. The basketball arena will take on a new look to give the feel of a concert hall. “So many people have attended symphony and ballet performances that were presented by our organization in the past 50 years. We wanted to give something back to the community that has supported us and made our association so successful.” Says Hanson. “It is our desire to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a concert befitting our past and future. The Stewart Education Foundation has graciously given us a grant to help underwrite the costs of this enormous event. Because of their generosity, we have been able to offer three-fourths of the tickets free to the greater Ogden community.” at 399-9214. There are a limited number of reserved concert tickets for $10.
