The Do - Gooder (A tribute to Carol Guthrie) By Mike Gillespie A batty gray haired lady, I’d dismissed her certainly. What could she know of style or class? Yet, had simple purity. Still she had a vision for the park Since it was just a field. That young ones ought to play there. From this she would not yield. Oblivious to all our doubts She found a grant to build A playground for the children Where they could squeal and shout. She knew she’d reached the pinnacle Of all her worldly deeds When a van pulled up discharging The benefactors of her dreams. What gleeful shouts! – Must cherubs be Little sprinters they – each one. Straight as a shot - from the parking lot To the sand, the slide, the swings. But three feet tall, they jump and run. Mom calls out Blah Blah Blah. Oh no, not that! They can’t look back. They’re having too much fun. To swing so high, to touch the sky. “Did you see how high I went?” Oh yes I see, it takes a kid To show us what she’s done. The music of their laughter, echoes through the neighborhood. Not till the sounds enveloped hearts Was she finally understood. Contented she, upon a bench, amused at watching this. How lucky she—to get to see Some of her dreams come true. How unlike us, who just discuss, the things we ought to do. Never looked for our approval. Didn’t need to ask above. She had her validation From the children she so loved. Now each of us, that’s worth so much And beyond a certain age Have pondered what to do on earth. How to help humanity. I know that there’s no contest. There’s no one keepin score. But against the gray haired lady I’m doing mighty poor. I tell you that I’ve tried a lot. Have ideas yet untested. So I’m proud to have known the lady By whom I have been bested. |
