Labor is getting more of the retail food dollar now than the farmer is. And who else in the food distribution chain is taking less now than a year ago except the farmer? This regulation is being considered for adoption for the purpose of establishing a portion of Utahs Underground Injection Program" as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act, P.L. as amended by PL and the rules and but well below the percentage increase in retail food prices for the year. Most of the increases in retail food prices are due to higher labor costs for processing, transportation and retailing, Nishiguchi said. And as consumers buy more foods that are processed to the point of heating and serving, will and retail prices labor costs naturally increase, he added. Consumer surveys reveal that most understand the farmer is not to blame Those surging food prices that were reported recently to be helping push the national inflation rate above 10 percent for the year are due to a number of higher costs but farm prices arent among them, according to one of Utahs top farm leaders. Frank O. Nishiguchi, president of the Utah Farm Bureau Federation (UFBF), pointed out that the prices farmers receive for most farm products are below those of a year ago. As head of the organization to which more than 80 percent of the states commercial farmers and ranchers hold voluntary membership, Nishiguchi directs the formation of Farm Bureau policy by its farm and ranch members. The fact that prices for most of the major levels farm products are below year-ag- o hasnt changed our basic philosophy that the free market system of supply and demand can take care of such problems, he said. Were opposed to high government d which lead to payments to farmers want we farm regulation. Instead, legislation that will allow us to run our own affairs and to take our own chances in the marketplace. Nishiguchi quoted the following prices from the USDA Statistical Reporting Service for September 1981 (the most recent month for which they have complete records) and for September 1980: Wheat, $3.63 per bushel this year compared to $3.97 a year ago, down 9 percent; com $2.52 in 81 compared to $3.03 a year ago, down 17 percent; hay, $61.00 this year and $70.00 last year, down 13 percent; beef cattle (steers and heifers), $59.00 this year, $64.70 last year, down 9 percent; lambs, $50.00 this year, $56.20 last year, down 11 percent; turkeys, 41 cents a pound this year, 52 cents last year, down 21 percent; and hogs, $49.10 this year, $45.80 last year, up 7 percent -- of For reservations Dayime Marilyn Nielson Evenings Lorene Smith GDcraaGG $18 per couple. in Helper Gas 30, 1981 ORANGEVILLE Elizabeth Lynn Baines, 73, died here Dec. 29 after a lengthy illness.
