Show 8A Wednesday, December 30, 19B1 Sun Advocate 'Best of' awards highlight sports year Sports Writer It would take a special edition of the Sun Advocate and a lot of time to note the highs and lows of the 1981 Carbon County sports season. Considering these intangibles, the sports staff has decided to meet the challenge and not consult anyone, hold a contest, or even notarize our choices for the Sports Spots Best of Awards. The following are the 1981 selections. Outstanding Athlete Female Carbon Highs Lisa Larson gets the nod here. The senior track and cross country runner won her third consecutive state cross country championship and fall this and was on the winning medley and 440 relay team for the Dinos. She has also won several invitational runs and competed in the St. George and Deseret News marathons. Outstanding Athlete Male James Lanum put the spotlight on Price and the College of Eastern Utah with his season on the cinders. The lanky sprinter was the top man among college and university runners in the state. He clocked a 10.4 in the 100 meter and qualified for national competition with a 21.2 in the 200. He also helped set a school record in the 440 relay with Kevin Tyler, Ron Jackson and Wade Dudley. For his efforts, Sweetness received a full track scholarship to Brigham Young University. the By DON VETTER qualified for regional competition. In the state 3A track meet, where Carbon took second, Larson won 1,600 and 3,200-met- er Outstanding Team Performance The Helper Junior High Rams captured the junior high wrestling crown with an outstanding team performance in a highly individualized sport. The Rams took the wrestling tournment from an experienced pair of Emery teams and a surprising Mont Harmon squad. The key in the Dec. 3 tournament was the Rams never say die attitude, especially in the consolation bracket. The Helper grapplers never gave up and captured important third and fourth place victories to take the trophy. The Rams actually made their wrestling squad a team, not only with the win, but with their support and comradery at the tournament. Upset of the Year After losing in regular season play to Mont Harmon by 30 points, Notre Dame upset the Pirates 3 44-4- in Februarys finals of the junior high basketball tournament. The Irish erased a five-poiPirate lead in the fourth quarter to take the game. Don Dunbar, Mike nt Beacco, Mark Badovanic and Frank Kraync led the little school that could to victory. Comeback of the Year Carbon Highs football team gets the nod here. The Dinos didnt win a football game in 1980. They came back this year to earn a state playoff berth for the first time in 17 years. The biggest and most exciting comeback during the Dinos comeback season was at the Homecoming game.
