Unknown Athlete Team The girls on Carbon Highs volleyball and basketball teams win a lot of games, compete well with upstate teams and dont charge at the gate for good sports entertainment. The cagers captured a share of the region title this year and 2 should do well in the season. In volleyball, the Dinos came back from being also rans in 1980, to winning a region tournament and qualifying for state play. Most Lethargic Fans Even though College of Eastern Utah football fans didnt have much to cheer about, they could at least enjoy the fresh air and 1981-8- pleasure of being with friends on a Saturday afternoon. Most Overzealous Fans The seven College of Eastern Utah football fans, led by Lee Johnson, who do cheer and have a good time. This includes everyone from the college and high school, the Castle Calley Barracudas, WBBA baseball, YBA basketball and every coach who makes sports possible for the youth and adult population. The Sun Advocate Sports staff is also indebted to these ladies and gentlemen. Without them we could not report the highs and lows in the Carbon County sports scene. 42-- 30, 1981 SumAdvocate, Price, Utah 9A Schools, community provide athletic action This year passed by all too swiftly, but it was not without its share of sports activity on the local scene. For most local teams, 1981 was far from The year started with an optimistic outlook for the Carbon High basketball team playing in the southern division of its region. The Dinos, under coach Gary Weight, were on top of the league standings early in the year, faltered down the stretch and finally lost a playoff game for state tournament berth. Weight has since left Carbon for the Uintah High coaching position and has been replaced by Mike Kernodle who has the Dinos off to a earth-shakin- 6-- 3 g. start. One bright light in the Carbon High basketball program this past year was the performance of the girls team. Coach Jerry Dyer, the Dinos football mentor, took over a disorganized team at the last minute and molded together a g quintet. They shared the region championship with Cedar City, but did not fare too high-scorin- Valuable Prizes from these Carbon Merchants sun sport: spots the state tournament. Coach Dyer came back in the fall to put together the first Carbon gridiron team to qualify for state playoffs in 17 years. The Dinos lost the first game in the playoffs on a cold, windy day in Price to American Fork which scored all of its points in a score. A major disappointment came in the spring when the Dino girls track team failed to defend its state title. Class the College of Eastern at Sports Utah continues on a losing note in well in top-heav- y 3-- A the major sports, football, basketball and baseball. The schools basketball team finished well down the list in the ICAC final standings. The typical junior college problem of keeping freshmen players for their sophomore year plagued Eagle coach Curt Jenson. The football situation appears to have settled somewhat after the by wait borla Ed Cody fiasco and Jeff Jorgenson has a long road to come back. The Eagle squad this past year won only one game but uncovered one of the finest running backs of the ICAC in the person of Keith Wilson of Layton. South Highs Doug Tonge gives promise of being a fine quarterback and will join Wilson next year. With a good recruiting year, the Eagles may be heard from on the gridiron next year. The return of football to the junior high level and the association with the two Emery County junior highs in the athletic league has provided all six schools in the league a well rounded program. Outside the school area, the Helper American Legion baseball team was back in the state tournament again under the direction of Elvin Fudd Juliano and John Gianini. The local team placed third in the District league during the and summer, captured a victory in the state meet. Price American proved to be very able representatives of the area in the little world series of Western Boys basketball after winning the district title in Helper.
