Show This Is War There is a war raging upon this campus that must rank as the most unequal since America fought Spain in the Spanish-American exercise. But een more remarkable, the under-dog is winning. It is not a war of bullets, or of words, it is a war of flesh and blood versus two tons of moving steel. It is a war of Pedestrian against Automobile. Try driving a car along 15th East at 10 a.m. on a school clay. You will see 20 cars lined up at a cross walk while 10 students cross the road in single file. You will see both sides of the road from the Library to the Union lined by scholars waiting to get their quota of jay walking for the day. You will see four cross-walks jammed with people with people with only two campus policemen to stop the steady flow of humanity. But if five students and five cars approach the walk at the same time, guess who the "campus cop" gives the right-of-way? The chances the pedestrian scholar takes are appalling. And there is nothing the driver can do against the "daring young man" but slam on the brakes. It is time that pedestrians confine themselves to walks and crossings. It is time the campus police realized the hazard haz-ard of 15th East and ticketed jay-walkers. The revenue from jay-walking tickets alone could make future tuition increases obsolete. |
