Taxi firms and city in accord Accord has been reached between city cab companies and the Salt Lake City commission following misunderstandings surrounding the city taxicab ordinance which became effective June 2. Owners of Ute, Yellow and City cabs voiced dissent in May, opposing the ordinance which called for the revocation of any taxi license if it went unused for 180 days. Charles Boynton, owner of Yellow Cab Co., called the ordinance unworkable, saying he believed licenses were owned by the companies, not the city. He has since been appeased by explanations of city policies presented by John Wheat, head of the city licensing department. Wheat says Yellow Cab owns more cars than licenses and will have no problem keeping the proper number of vehicles on the street. The ordinance, he explains, will simply keep a necessary balance in the Salt Lake City cab industry. Research indicates the city needs 144 cabs to meet public needs, and any unused license would forfeit services to the public.
