Show TOWN'S FIRST FREE SCHOOL -A r. Dedham, Mass., Very Properly Celebrates Cele-brates Us Founding Nearly Three Centuries Ago. In celebration of the two hundred ! and seventy-fifth anniversary of the : starting of a free public school In Ded-! Ded-! ham. Mass.. hold by many to have been the 'irst one on the continent, the schools of the town held spec::;', exer-cisos. exer-cisos. The free school commemo rated was built in IG Io, it having been voted by the citizens assembled In town meetings that sufficient tax-s be raised to establish the school. There has been free public instruction in Dedham ever since. So fundamental and all-Important is this early ste p of the Puritan fathers C'-nsi:rr'd Ibit the anniversaries are ever kept nppprmnst in the thoughts ' of educators and other patriotic citl- zons. In JDS the commonwealth erected a tablet on the spot where this first school was locnted. Tn lSt)5, the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary anniver-sary of the school, a big pubi'c celebration cele-bration took place, with prominent men present.
