Police said the victim was shopping with her mother and friends at ZCMI Thursday evening By MARK EDDINGTON Staff Writer to center of earth? Journey Bountiful man, known as the only human to BOUNTIFUL -- - A g safely land an airplane upside down, has accomplished another feat. He crash-lande- d his chopper deep inside a Hawaii volcano, and lived to tell about it. Craig Hosking was "plucked" from 600 feet deep inside the volcano surrounded by deadly sulfuric acid smoke and steep, jagged cliffs blocking his only escape route out of the volcano's mouth. "We had little to no chance at all of getting out alive before the deadly fumes overcame us," Craig said in a telephone conversation from his home. Immediately the survivors realized the presence of gas and a lack of oxygen. They ran up a slight slope and then climbed on their hands and knees to a ledge less than 10 feet from the craters opening. Craig managed to repair the radio and call for help. The rescue helicopter managed to follow directions from Craig and slowly descended into the crater until the chopper's skids were about chest high to Craig. "I grabbed a skid and climbed aboard, and we slowly rose up and out of the volcano. I had called to the others to come down where the chopper laid, but they didn't hear me. To delay the ascent would have been dangerous for the rescue helicopter," Craig explained. The following day one of the two men still in the crater braved the rugged cliff and climbed the remaining few feet to safety. It was the third day before the remaining man could be rescued from his cliff perch.
