Show The Utah Enterprise Review, February 2 , 1977 Page 2b Junior Achievement Sets Goal of $62,650 Financial Illiteracy Widespread in Colleges Personal and consumer finance illiteracy among university students appears to be prevalent, according to research recently completed at Brigham Young University. The study made by Boyd G. Worthington, director of the admissions council at BYU, demonstrates the need for educational programs to prepare students to act intelligently and effectively as consumers. The study recommends more research be conducted to define what is critical for consumer literacy, and how consumer competencies are best developed. Worthington said the need appeared in the ability to develop better skills and understanding in basic matters of personal and consumer finance, and in the acquisition of adequate information to manage consumer affairs relating to consumer rights and responsibilities in the marketplace, and money management as it relates to financial planning, investment, insurance and legal documents. Concepts relating to using credit, credit costs, credit laws, financial planning, investments and legal documents were areas not understood by the majority of polled students. The need for further consumer literacy was especially prevelant among those whose college major did not typically expose them to concepts of personal and consumer finance, the study points out. House Bill No. 8, recently killed by the Utah Senate, would have required high school students to study the free enterprise system as a requirement for graduation. According to the data compiled by Worthington, such a requirement at the secondary level might have better prepared students to make the credit, savings and investment decisions that ultimately affect one's financial security and standard of living. Worthington, who made the study to fulfill requirements for a masters degree, was awarded the annual Robert El Slaughter Research Award in Business and Office Education for 1976.
