of the family were sick dad was persuaded to accept a press pressing ing in vi tation of mr and mrs ed firmage of provo to accompany them and family on a two weeks visit in southern california being assured by both the doctors and their two patients that all would be well with the latter he finally decided to turn the work of editing two issues of the record to the junior editor and friday evening accompanied mrs firmage who came up to see the sick ones to provo on the first leg of his two weeks vacation I 1 I 1 those who comprise the party on this particular outing ore are mr and mrs ed firmage edwin buly billy and louise firmi 1 age mr joe cheever miss lols lois whitman miss mi phyllls phyllis aalboe and tad dad I 1 I 1 the nine of us left provo sunday at a m in the big pierce arrow car of mr firmage and the following Is the log of the first days ride which in I 1 our opinion Is a bit out of the ordinary I 1 the first stop was made at fillmore utah at 8 a in tor for breakfast forty five minutes were spent in first state capitol cedar city was reached at i i fresh ments because of some road construction st slow elow driving in a lew few sections ot of the southern part of the state was necessary st george was reached at 1220 p m A little while before reaching this point a heavy rain was encountered which continued until several miles into arizona when near moapa nevada a puncture caused a delay ot of some twenty minutes to change tires tiresy at crystal a few miles farther south we ran into another heavy rain yet notwithstanding we arrived at los vegas at p in mountain time here we ve had dinner leaving there aderma at pacific time and pushed on to yerma california calic where C W we e had to check in and have our baggage inspected this was at p in and at we reached barstow california where we put up for the night this gave us fifteen hours and twenty five minutes on the road deducting one hour and twenty five minutes tor for stops made 14 hours driving time in that fourteen hours a distance of miles was covered not a bad days drive edwin firmage jr was at the wheel the entire distance gas consumed to lo make that distance was approximately 72 gallons in the past few years we have made several trips by auto across the desert to california but never before with as great a degree of comfort and pleasure as on last sunday with the exception of where construction work was in progress and that was comparatively compart ively little the roads were perfect no dust no sun I 1 no discomfort from heat but pleasantly cool and delightfully enjoyable during the entire fifteen hours of driving the night spent in the hotel at barstow was cool and pleasant it was an ideal day for traveling an ideal ride an ideal night tor for rest and sleep and ideal companionship panion ship we are hoping the rest of the vacation will be likewise i we read in sundays paper that W R hearst Is strong tor for roosevelt and garner he declaring both men are eminently qualified for president and vice president of the united states because of long years of 0 skillful public work and faithful public service strange perhaps but we agree with hearst resuming our ride monday we left barstow at 6 a m monday driving over perfect roads with perfect climatic conditions dit ions we had breakfast at V Ic torville then the beautiful scenic dr drive ive up the slope of the san ban bernardino mountains then the wonderful ride down the long stretch to the city of san bernardino then on through the flowered highway lined with orange groves vineyards and constantly changing scenes of beauty and fragrance and hustling cities towns and villages among which was uplands tho the home city of rev bert foster ontario where here friend dan richardson was once so popular and where I 1 his als family still reside all stirring up pleasant mem irles iries of the past then on over the always busy valley boulevard to alhambra the home city of dr L H and where naturally a cordial welcome awaited the party and where a jolly few hours were spent at the doctors home eating delicious fruit from his small orchard and partaking of lunch on his lawn then after lunch with dr and mrs and their two daughters miriam and susie and their young guest douglas wentworth of salt lake added to the party the ride was continued on to long beach and here we are all quartered at the venetian square apartments on the beach the broad pacific ocean at our feet as it were with several battle ships in full view and more expected soon to tie be part of the attractions tor for the great olympian doings during the summer and sailors galore oft off duty strolling here there and everywhere adding color to tho the picture with us was a young man joe cheever I 1 who Is experiencing his first trip out of his native state utah and it was indeed worth the price of admission when we I 1 I 1 first reached the land of sunshine and I 1 lowers flowers palm trees and orange groves 1 etc HOW thrilled he was with the many I 1 strange sights in a strange land yesterday I 1 I 1 afternoon when we arrived at long beach and lor for the first time he saw the I 1 I 1 mighty ocean he just stood and gazed I 1 and marveled it was but a short time beffie he and his chum billy firmage Pir mage were in ill bathing suits and enjoying a dip to joe particularly it was a great adventure then atter after dinner when the lights were on a tour ot of the pike was made and the crowds the barkers the thrillers the takes etc so common mon at such places marveled at and enjoyed by him and the young folks of the party affording them the usual holiday pleasures great indeed are the days ot of our youth and thus thu wo we enter alter after a hearty breakfast the third day of the outing with the entire party at the oceans edge bat bathlo bath hinti ln strolling writing and playing on the sand of the seashore if anything worth mentioning happens from now on it will be reported later on long beach california july 12 1932 W 9 B i B 5 THE STONE WALL AT dear dad you have seen a stone wall a hundred yards long or more running up the mountain opposite dahla dahl ranch on the highway tory story just came to my door in which you are concerned just because we call you dad you seem to have the idea that you are about the oldest person alive around the old park city town I 1 have it irom from the lady herself hersted bersted self that you boa boasted a little about the early days of 1882 and she remarked that she had come to live in P park ark city in 1877 herself rather bather took your breath it sam did the same tor for me tor for it was proved that the fame me person who said this to you was once the little girl who so often sat on her fathers door step lust just across the street from where our oft more likely the daughter of 0 that little girt girl of 0 long ago to me what have years to do with age when they toll roll smoothly along and leave a placid countenance looking irom from middle age appearance such Is the case with the lady in story mrs whitney now ot of berkeley california or the little girl of that other day whose lather father was mr mason agent ot of the marsae marsac company from michigan well she had watched judge street and his big boy son charley go in arid and out ot of the house across the street a little up I 1 from opposite many and many a time I 1 you were kind enough to give her my I 1 address in III salt lake and she was good I 1 enough to look me up today we had bad a very pleasant chat indeed she had road read I 1 some ot of my stuff in your column it seems then she took me out to her I 1 waiting auto and made me acquainted I 1 with joe walker who had driven her on a trip over the scenic round ol of the I 1 grand canyon zion and bryce etc well a little teak talk soon proved that old park farb 1 city had bad another link tor for me tor for mr walker was from that town since I 1 lived there and then he was the son eon of an old time acquaintance joe walker a son ot of the walker known as blumb bob famous for his mining ventures on crescent ridge and hhaynes canyon in the very early days before the crescent boom that uncovered three and a half million dollars of ore and built a narrow gauge railroad over five miles long to carry its rich ore to market and to mill blumb bob walker saw it all in dreams and told me of the riches that lay close at hand with which he meant to use to fulfill yet greater dreams in the construction of a splendid temple surpassing in grandeur all the temples ot of the world ancient or modern the picture of this wonderful structure stands out clear in my memory its site was to be across the jordan river which always struck me as a poor place tor for a one hundred million dollar marble temple of one thousand calums of two hundred feet height and twenty feet diameter base but upon reflection where today are the millions so generously yielded from the great treasuries of the park country most of it scattered to the tour winds of the tha world suppose it had been used by some visionary to build a monument to time and eternity it would at least have advertised utah the mines of colorado built denver but the mines 0 of f utah have done but little for its capitol city measured by the vast product joe walker of today was kind to say that he had read some of my stories in your paper and liked them for old time sake but joe did more tor for me the incident of meeting him was the hinge that swung open a large door of memory how blum bob walker as he was best known one calm evening stood for a moment in his back yard bare headed beaded when a mysterious bullet creased the top tol of his head killing him instantly his house was east of the snyder later called the kimball livery stable at the foot of main street it was believed that the bullet sped from somewhere at the rear of that stable corral but who or why was never revealed and remains sealed with the dead past by the way no one seems to have fallen heir to that blum bob which I 1 saw in action a number of times at least I 1 have never heard beard of it since the inspired hands that held it grew still it was bottle shaped made of polished brass ass what it contained was a secret but from the brass stopper center came a stout thong about sixteen inches long with a 0 knot at the end walker sitting down would rest his elbows on his knees holding the knot of the blumb bob string between the tore fore fingers and thumbs of both hands lifting the bottle from the ground it if there was mineral in the earth below the instrument s tru ment it would slowly begin to move in a circle the circle would enlarge according to the extent of the mineral deposit in the earth walker said bald the blumb bob instrument in the magic hands of walker who alone was empowered P cowered to use it through a direct revelation from heaven would do yet another stunt by trial the side line of a vein could be found the instrument then would swing pendulum fashion instead of in a circle again it if used in say a tunnel where the vein was ahead not yet reached the instrument first poised at rest would draw out ot of a vertical line attracted toward the ore body ahead As to the last I 1 was never satis satisfied fled with the assertion that the line was out of blumb but politeness forbade question in so august a presence walker had a number of ardent believers in the power of hla his instrument and himself also I 1 v vas as doubtful as to the slight body movement effects on the heavy weight at the end of the string in producing desired movements I 1 could only guess at the weight as profane hands were not allowed to even touch any part of the sacred instrument ment which was carried in a heavy leather case when not in use not in a spirit of criticism but rather to relate the curious things that existed about the old camp prompts this recital I 1 we had several spiritual guides who assisted the prospector in taking a long chance in finding the ore colonel ferry william id once chided mo me for saying 1 I told you so when after spending some thousands and some years he gave it up at that place he said street your philosophy Is wrong I 1 am quitting this place in my search tor for a mine but the effort Is not a 8 failure as you seem to think tor for I 1 say that I 1 have proven that ore is 13 not to be found here and no one need dig here looking for it to prove where it Is not Is a rather large and expensive job colonel was my reply and yet that Is what roust must be done in some ot of the best mines find where the ore Is not and open the book ot of nature for a look at a page ot of bare formation that may have a story now we have fallen on times when it I 1 li is not alone to find the ore but to find a market may this evil day soon pass yours truly l CHAS E STREET salt lake city utah july 10 1932 |
