Show "ME UND GOTT." That the Kaiser knows the value of religious fanaticism is made evident by the following address which he made to his army soon after the beginning of the war: "Remember that you are the chosen people. The spirit of the Lord has descended upon me because I am the emperor of the German Ger-man people. I am the instrument of the Almighty, His servant. Woe and death to all the world who shall oppose His will Woe and death to all those who do not believe in my mission. Let them all perish, all the enemies of the German people. And God demands de-mands their destruction ; God who by my mouth bids you do Hi3 will." When the czar was at the head of the Russian army, millions of subjects were willing to die for Russia, because the czar stood at the head of the Greek Catholic church and inspired hope of eternal life in those who were inviting death. With Emperor Nicholas' dethronement, the whole army became ineffective. On the first of the year, the emperor of Germany, again boasting of God being on his side, said to his soldiers. "The fearful battles on the bloody hills around Verdun were not in vain ; they created new foundations for the conduct of the war. The year 1917 with its great battles has proved that the German people have in the Lord of Creation above an unconditional uncondi-tional and avowed ally on whom they can absolutely rely. Without With-out Him all would have been in vain." If the Kaiser keeps up his sacrilegious talk, and finally wins the war, he will declare himself the vicegerent of God and proceed to create a religion of his own. Ogden Standard. |
