Show PROVO CITY COUNCIL baileys hotel at provo on the day before yesterday was the scene of a blaze which threatened to be very disastrous but fortunately it was waa extinguished in its incipiency several persons indulged in a fusillade of words against the alleged general incompetency of the local fire department and while they were th thu amusing themselves other persons whose better judg ment prevailed obtained a private hose and put out the fire which was casseu by a kerosene lamp being knocked over by a plumber named Clayt clayton it JS is said that the fire alarm was sounded founded and that only one member of the department responded there has been considerable ill feeling existing among the members of the department for some time CHIEF RESIGNS the disaffection has existed to that extent that chief cheever of thede the department part ment sent in the following resignation to the city council which was received after a good deal of discussion to the mayor and city council of provo city gentlemen owing to the action taken at t the last meeting of the council in regard to taking the fire team from the department part ment and using it for sprinkling the streets against the wishes of the department I 1 herewith tender you my resignation as chief of provo fire department and ask you to accept the same fame J E CHEEVER FROM THE FIREMEN the fir firemen deal of indignation among the members of the city council as the following as appears in the Dip dispatch patch will attest councilor simmons wanted to know who was to rule the city the fire de apartment eastment Eart part ment or the council it was well known that the abu city was not able to at af j ford a dress parade of the fire depart ment it was a time 3 for ec nomy it vas paean an insult to the city for the fire department to come here and dictate terms as it bad done tonight to night he moved that the resignation of the department part ment be accepted councilor simmons motion was seconded by several members before the motion was put mayor dusenberry took occasion to state that he could not see what great crime the council had committed to cause such a tempest as the department had worked themselves up to IN L W councilor farrer fairer said that his hia idea in moving to refer the communication to the committee on fize department was to see it if it was not possible to effect a compromise he had no doubt but that the action of the boys boy bad been too hasty hastye and from a conversation with a majority of the department he felt perfectly free in stating elating that the boys would willingly give up the hall so ao long as they were allowed to retain exclusive use of the team councilor irvine said the committee had requested the chief to meet with them and when he be did so BO the commit tee had bad endeavored to show him how the city was wa endeavoring to curtail expenses and that how bow by doing po co it would create a fund from which the city could equip the department with rubber coats and boots boote and other necessary conveniences the only compromise that could be effected by the committee if this communication was referred to them woula be to acquiesce in the terms term dictated by the department for oue he be was not dot ready to be controlled in any such kuch manner especially under the circumstances the committee recommended the use of the team on the streets for ninety days for a test if at the end of thirty days it bad been demonstrated that it would be wisdom to take the team off the streets then he believed the city would have done so the boys bays had acted alto gether too hastily councilor barney thought the department part ment had bad drafted their petition in too strong terms considering that the action ot of the city in proposing to put the team on the streets was merely for a test teat councilor mccullough did not see what excusable grounds the department stood on in sending in such a petition when the council took the action they did with the sole view to benefiting the whole city he was in favor of accepting the resignation and that too with a vote of thanks if this department were the only men in the city capable of extinguishing fire possibly then they would have to yield to their unjust demands I 1 councilor barney said the whole matter was merely a test but yet if the city had to take a stand on the matter he was ready to settle the question tonight he was with the boys of the fire department ori on every legitimate proposition and would ony be glad if the city could coula afford them every modern convenience but the city was compelled through force of circumstances to cut down expenses and it was only with a view to economy that the report had been made recommending the use of the fire team on the sprinkling cart the boys bad forgotten to mention iff id the petition the fact that thit tha city was paying nearly a year rent for their ball the matter was temporarily disposed of by referring it to a committee |
