Show The Republican state convention of California has met and adopted a platform containing such planks as in the opinion of the political managers of the party, would secure the greatest number of votes. Following is a summary of the principals of the party in the "golden state" as enunciated by the convention: The platform of the Republican State Convention reaffirms the platform of the Chicago Convention of 1880; refers to the financial record of the party; demands that the present or a similar Sunday law be enforced, providing for the suspension of all unnecessary labor on Sunday without seeking to dictate otherwise how the day shall be spent, simply claiming it as a day of rest and recreation; that the railroads are of public use and should be under Government contract, discrimination against persons and places should be prohibited, the charges of transportation should be based on the cost, expenses, and repairs with a reasonable rate of interest on the actual value of the roads which shall bear the same proportion to the assessed value as other property does, the Railroad Commissioners being pledged to carry out this principal. The railroad contract system is condemned and the party pledged to break it up to the extent, if necessary of making it a public offence. Congressional legislation regarding interstate traffic is demanded, further subsides in railroads opposed, and restoration to the public domain of forfeited land grants demanded. The corporations should be compelled to pay in full without rebate or compromise. Natural highways should be kept at the highest efficiency. Joint action should be allowed against persons or corporations threatening or committing nuisance by injury of water courses and adjacent lands. The platform also congratulates the people on the settlement of the Chinese immigration question by the passage of the restriction bill and declares in favor of civil service reform and economy of administration. |
