Show ROBBERY AT THE LOGAN HOUSE. A robbery occurred at the Logan House last Saturday, which has given rise to considerable discussion and interest in town, and we deem it no more than just to all concerned to give the particulars, withholding certain names only. On the evening named a young man, W. G. Kohler, came down on the U. & N. train from ??, and took a room at the Logan House. He was accompanied to his room by Mr. Blanchard, the proprietor, at about ten o'clock, and when inside the room handed to Mr. Blanchard a silver half-dollar in payment for his lodging. Next morning as Mr. Kohler states, he rose at about 7 o'clock, put on his clothes and started down stairs, when, putting his hand in his pocket, he missed his pocket book. He afterwards testified that it contained $15.25, and that, in undressing, he put it in his pants pocket, folded the pants and placed them under his pillow. On missing the pocket-book he at once returned to his room and made a thorough search for it. Parting to find it he reported his loss to Mr. Blanchard, who at once notified the officers. A guest at the hotel named Mr. Koch testified to seeing four young men come up stairs, remain in the corridor a few minutes and then leave at about half past twelve or one o'clock. Other guests saw them also. The names of these four were obtained and on Monday morning they were arrested and tried before Justice Cummings. The witnesses for the prosecution merely prayed the presence of the four young men in the corridor of the hotel not far from Mr. Kohler's room between 12 and 1 o'clock in the night. One witness for the defense accounted for their presence there by testifying that he had given them permission to go to his room at the hotel, and get a bottle of wine. It afterwards transpired that after leaving the hotel, the quartette came up town and bought four cans of oysters for $1, paying only half a dollar down and getting trusted for the balance. This would not indicate that they had just stolen $15.25. There being no substantial evidence against them, they were discharged. |
