Show Throughout the various states the two great political parties are holding their nominating conventions. For once there is no great national question of sufficient importance to create much party excitement at the coming fall elections, and campaign battle cries relate mostly to local issues. It does not appear that the next congress will differ greatly in the proportions of Democrats and Republicans from the last. Such at least are the present indications. It was predicted last spring that President Arthur's action in vetoing the Chinese bill, would give the Democrats great gains on the Pacific coast, but it is far from certain that this prediction will be fulfilled. |
