Show 1 1 "BOUGHT AND PAID FOR" Hi I An elaborate production of Broadhurst's Hu "Bought and Paid For" is being staged at the H Empress this week by the Ernest Wilkes Stock H company. Scenicly the detail is perfect and while H ' 1 the members of the company meet the require- H, ments of the different characters fairly well, in H all candor one is constrained to say that there H 1 are times when the principals could make much H f more of their opportunities. H f In the first act and in the scenes of love or H comedy, their work is smooth and finished and H ' very pleasing, but the big scene at the end of the H' ' second act is a distinct disappointment. So much H could be made of it and has been made of it by H j i others in past performances that both fell short Hj of expectations. At that Miss Bryant was greatly H' superior to Mr. Smythe in this big scene. H Clifford Thompson in the role of Jimmie Gil- H ley, a part which has always been the individual H hit of the play and which made Frank Craven fa- H ; mous, was very good. Claire Sinclair was equal 1,1 to the occasion as the wife of the shipping clerk who rose in the world. Evelyn Duncan was a chic little maid and Ancyn McNulty fell down as the Japanese servant Under the direction of Morris Andrews, a splendid musical program is one of the features t at the Empress this week. hi' The splendid dramatic farce, "Officer 6GG" HI : which was originally produced by George M. H' I- ' r Cohan will be the attraction at the Empress dur- Hlr ' IjinS the coming week. Hi- i I |
