In medieval England, sweet buns replaced this Roman "cake." Another custom was for guests to bring small cakes to the wedding and pile them in the center of the table. To ensure good luck, the bride and groom were to kiss over the cakes without knocking a single cake to the floor. It was a French baker that began the tradition tradi-tion of icing all the small cakes into one large cake. Thus, our modern tiered wedding cake.
