Show Accidents Prompt MSL Study Of Parks By MARK D. MICKELSEN NORTH SALT LAKE -Two accidents in North Salt Lake parks in the last three weeks have prompted city offi- cials to look into additional safety precautions for the community's com-munity's youngsters. MAYOR ROBERT Palm-quist Palm-quist Tuesday said a young girl was injured seriously when one of the city's lawnmowers was accidentally driven over a baseholder, shooting the object ob-ject into a nearby pavilion and hitting the youngster in the leg. The mayor said city workers attended to the girl until her parents were notified. She was later taken to the hospital where physicians diagnosed a chipped bone caused by the flying baseholder, he said. NORTH SALT Lake's liability liabil-ity insurance will cover the hospital costs, he said, and the parents of the girl have no in tentions of suing the city for the accident. After the accident happened. hap-pened. Mayor Palmquist told the council he formulated a written plan to be distributed to all ciy workers, outlining procedures to be followed in the even of a citizen-related emergency. HOWEVER, BEFORE the procedural outline could be distributed, another park accident acci-dent occurred. The mayor said several boys were climbing on a hot dog stand at the North Salt Lake Little League Park when one of them found an electrical plug. When the youngster inserted in-serted the plug into an electrical electric-al outlet he received a severe shock, Mayor Palmquist said. THE BOY was hospitalized and recently released into his parents' care, "but still he is unable to walk," the mayor said. "Apparently, we're liable for that thing (hot dog stand)," he added. FEARING SOME electrical problems with the stand. Councilman Rod Wood suggested sug-gested having an electrician look over the facility and report re-port back to the council. Mayor Palmquist said the city's ci-ty's Little League pres. has already been contacted about the problem. "KIDS CAN crawl up on the thing and fall off and we could be liable," he said. He agreed to have an electrician check the wiring on the stand. While no formal decision was made, the city council agreed to leave the hot dog stand in theparkand "see what happens" after the electrical checks are made. DEPARTMENT heads and municipal workers will receive an accident procedure outline, pinpointing what types of action ac-tion to take in an emergency or while they are awaiting medical medic-al help. |
