Show OREM TIMES Page 3 NEWS, STORIES AND EVENTS FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD Thursday, December 14, 2006 OVERHEARD J.N 10 REM What do you put up for outdoor Christmas decorations and displays? White or colored lights? ',1 JVl "We put lights and garland on our bannister ban-nister and a bow on our lamppost. Colored lights, red, white and green. I Jody Slagowski "At the moment, we have white lights on the house. When we have a party, we have six-foot Nutcrackers. They will go outside. We also have a wreath on all our outside doors." I Sandra Rodriguez "Lights and I have a lamp post wrapped in garland with a bow around it. And a little lighted flickering flick-ering snow man. AD our lights are colored." I Linda Tyler "It's been too cold outside, we havent decorated yet. We'll probably just put some lights on our house. White lights. Most of our decorations we got on sale after last Christmas or from my parents. Part of it is economics while another is trying try-ing not to be tacky." I Brian and Briahna Bushman "Just lights around the front door and a wreath. White lights." Tyler Spencer "This year it's totally different. We moved from a ranch where we had to provide pro-vide our own electricity. So this year we have five trees, three reindeer, a snowman, snow-man, carousels and a skiing polar bear. White lights." I Mary Ann Hiskey "We don't really do all that much. We put lights on the house and in some trees in our yard. Colored lights." Molly MpTeer "We have lights, plastic candy canes and a great, big inflatable snow globe. My husband is a big kid. He says it's for the kids. but it's not. We also have a wreath on the front door." Twenty-five Utah County children enjoyed a special shopping spree Saturday, but it had nothing to do with toys, dolls or video games. These children, mostly from the Orem-Provo area, are from economically disadvantaged families who are currently homeless. Instead of Barbies and G.I. Joes, the kids, ages 6 to 15, armed with $100 gift certificates, certifi-cates, combed the Mervyns at the University Mall for hats, mittens, gloves and warm winter win-ter coats. They "were very appreciative, apprecia-tive, that's the biggest thing," said LoAn Le, a family development devel-opment program coordinator with Community Action Services. Ser-vices. She is helping provide the children's' families with tem porary housing and also selected se-lected children most in need of winter clothing for the shopping shop-ping spree. "One that brought tears to my eyes, she said to her mom 'You can wrap this for me and now you can shop for others and you don't have to worry about me,' " Le said. "She was 9, and at that age they already know." Tammy Heaton, store manager man-ager for the Orem Mervyns department store, said the company began the Child Spree program in 1992 and recently re-cently changed it from a back to school event to a way to provide seasonal clothing for disadvantaged kids during the cold holiday months. Each child was paired up with a volunteer chaperone Saturday morning who guided them around the store, helped them pick out clothing items and befriended them. Volunteers Volun-teers were Mervyns employees employ-ees and staff members with Community Action Services and United Way. "I had a little girl hugging her volunteer the whole time," Heaton said. "The little girl was just attached to her. It was pretty cute." Mervyns raised funds for the event by selling its Sprockets Sprock-ets stuffed animals, all the proceeds pro-ceeds of which went toward the Child Spree program. Orem store employees pitched in to buy each child a fleece blanket and give them a goody basket filled with some candy, a toothbrush and toothpaste, Heaton said. Family Fam-ily First Credit Union gave each child a new pair of shoes and socks. One family with Community Action Services cooked a hot breakfast for the children and volunteers. She said it was heart -warming to see the children unconcerned un-concerned about toys, brand names and the typical materialistic mate-rialistic concerns most kids have at this time of year. "They weren't picking out the expensive things, but warm clothing," Heaton said.
