Most were sent into different supply areas, or into something where their skills could be used. I had had a little typing, so I was made a company clerk in charge of all the men, and I never saw any warfare. I stayed right in the office, working at a desk. I lived in a barracks on the base, and all our food was v shipped in. It was easier to . drink beer than the local water, wa-ter, so I drank a lot of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola, which somehow was refrigerated. They carried car-ried big knives and could they throw those knives! It was said they could throw a knife and cut the head off a goat at fifty feet. The tea fields in India were beautiful. The tea plant grows about three or four feet high, and then occasional trees are planted to shade the tea plants. We watched the Indians Indi-ans go into the fields and cut the tea leaves. After the war was over, I worked on long lists of men who were to be loaded on airplanes and shipped home. I wrote thousands of names. These were men who had been flying the Hump into China, over the Himalayas. Having served in a cold area, they came to the camp carrying carry-ing sleeping bags, big coats and other heavy clothes. They just left the stuff in the camp, and so the camp was full of winter gear. The sad part of the war's end was that we put hundreds of guys on planes and shipped them home, but then we had to get on a train back to Calcutta, Cal-cutta, where we were put Orem Senior Friendship Center I Centers closed for holiday All senior centers will be closed on Dec. 25 for Christmas. I arrived home in June 1946 and was separated at Fort Douglas. I had been corresponding cor-responding with Ruth Jensen, also from Manti. I gave Ruth a diamond at the end of June, and we were married on July 15. I learned in the military how to get along with people and with horses.
