Show WORK BEING PUSHED ON HOVER ROUTE Ten Miles of Grade Already Completed, Says Supervisor Super-visor in Charge. GRAVEL COMES NEXT Finance Committee Is Still Busy in Matter of Securing Se-curing Funds. Ten miles of the grade for the Wend-over Wend-over automobile route has been completed. com-pleted. This is the information brought to Salt Lako yesterday by Tooele County Koad Supervisor Mathews, who has charge of the work. The tractors and gang in charge of tho work arrived at Burro, the next station west of Knolls, on Monday of this week, having completed com-pleted tho grade between Knolls and Burro, a distance of ten miles, in a little lit-tle more than ton days. This is traveling travel-ing at the rate of nearly a mile a day. l-'rom Burro to the edge of the wait beds is about fifteen miles, and if rain dues not interfere the grade should be completed to the salt beds in about two weeks. Then, there is about two, or perhaps three, miles of grade to be Built from the wesern edge of the salt bedH to Woudovor, and the grade part of Hie work for the Wendover automobile automo-bile route will be finished. Gravel Is Needed. Of course, this will not complete the road, as it has to be covered with gravel before it is mud proof. The grade itself would mako a dry weather route, but it is the intention of the nromotors, who are connected with the business interests of Salt Lake, to make an all-year road. It was lioped the grade could be thrown up this fall, giving it a chaneo to settle by next spring, when the gravel is to be put in place. This is the way roads should be built, all agree, and it is the plan adopted in building the WendoveT route. If the weather continues dry for three weeks more the grade will be completed and will be ready for the gravel in the Bpriug. Tt. is no longer a theory, but an established es-tablished fact that the road can be built at a moderate cost, as advocated by thoflo who have labored for this route. Word received from Mr. Mathews is to the effect that there has not been a single engineering difficulty to overcome over-come and that there will not be any. Tractor Works Well. The tractor works to perfection and fairly eats up the soil in placing it on an oven grade on its trip across the mud flat. Dry weather is all that is asked for and a record will be made in throwing up a grade between Knolls and the salt beds. The finance committee which is at work iu Salt Lake soliciting funds is et ill active. The committee is meeting with succobb everywhere, the turn-downs being few and far between. In fact, several business firms have called up members of the finance commitee and offered subscriptions over the phone. This shows the interest in the route and that the efforts of those opposed are not making headway. More money is needed, however, even if it is not spent this fall, because, the work has been begun and those behind it will not let It lapse. The money which is not needed this fall in building build-ing the grade wilt be needed next spring in putting the gravel in place. Tt ip proposed to get this money now and at the first signs of spring to resume re-sume work, spend it, and cinch the automobile auto-mobile travel for Salt Lake next 3rear. |
