Show . 1 ; COMMUNICATION i Steel Poles o Eleventh East, j Editor The Tribune: The notice in the preaa rvjardirtK the city rommlssion's ac- j t:on relative to steel telephone and ele- ; Mc light poles being installed on Eleventh Elev-enth Bast does not convev the facts In t he promises. On May 9, 1914. the residents of Eleventh Elev-enth East, between Ninth South and Yale avenue, petitioned, the commission to have the telephone and electric wires upon j said street, prior to the same being paved, eitiier grounded or suspended upon steel posts, and the large wooden poles in said : street removed. On Mav li the city recorder re-corder notified the petitioners that their I petition had been granted and "that the j I'tah Light and Railwav company and i the Mountain States Telephone company j i have agreed to install a joint system. j and that steel poles had been ordered installed on Eleventh East street, between be-tween Ninth South and Yale avenue." The said companies, however, neglected and refused to carry out their agreement with the city commission, but instead installed more and larger wooden poles j and placed concrete around the base of all the wooden poles on said street. September 2t$, 19U, the petitioners again called the attention of the city commission commis-sion to this neglect and refusal of said companies to comply with the requirements require-ments of the commission and their own agreements, and on October 7, 1914, the petitioners were notified by the city re corder that the said companies had again been notified by the city "to put in steel poles as soon as possible." Said companies continuing to refuse to obey the orders of the commission, and receinetiting around the base of the wooden poles, indicating their determination determina-tion to maintain wooden poles upon said street, the petitioners, on August 31, 1315, again notified the city commission of said willful disregard of their orders in the premises. In answer thereto, on September Septem-ber 22. 1915, one of the commissioners notified the residents to appoint a committee com-mittee to meet represents lives of the I'tah Light and Railway company before the commission. t0 .hear their arguments and give your views on the matter." The satri letter for retaining wooden poles is that "their high tension wires would be dangerous on steel poles," the same argument ar-gument that lias been used against steel poles on practically every other street in the City. If the high tension wires of the larger cities of the t'nited States are safe on sleel posts, it is difficult for the petitioners petition-ers to believe that such wires would be dangerous in Salt Lake City; hence the petitioners refused to meet representatives representa-tives of said company and argue the reconsideration by the commission of Its former action, but respectfully asked the commission to maintain its position previously pre-viously taken in the matter and guarantee guaran-tee to them the same rights accorded to residents upon other paved streets In the city. A statement in the press today "that the commission had agreed to go out and look over the situation before deciding its course in the matter" is misleading, because the commission has long ago decided de-cided that upon paved streets these companies should install steel poles, and I wire previously such decision as regards Kleventh East street had been made a matter of record hy the city. The above facts should be known to the public. A RESIDENT OF ELEVENTH EAST. |
